RECENT HISTORY

The Miami Hurricanes have won ten or more games five years in a row. Last season was our best year so far – an undefeated season capped off with our second consecutive BCS National Championship.

RING OF HONOR

Mike Collins

Mike Collins arrived on campus from the state of Nebraska with much fanfare. The #1 ranked recruit in the Class of 2015 initially had no interest in becoming a Hurricane. Throughout the recruiting process he developed a relationship with the coaches at Miami. The 5-star athlete came in with an impressive skillset but no clear position – he was convinced to come to Miami when he was given the opportunity to play QB.

Off the field issues led to an opening at QB1 in the fall of 2015, Collins won the battle for that job as a true freshman and never looked back. Mike Collins led the Miami Hurricanes to a 45-3 record as a starter over his four year career – including BCS Championship wins in 2017 and 2018.

Collins finished his career with his name at the top of the Miami record books. His 3,931 yards and 34 TD were the most in a single season at the U. He also holds the career records for passing yards (11,217) and TD (96).

Chris Ford

Chris Ford came in from the state of Georgia as the #16 ranked player in the class of 2015. The 5-star athlete became a center for the Canes, beating out a senior for the starting job as a true freshman. Ford went on to start 55 straight games at Center for the Miami Hurricanes. He finished his career as a 2x First Team All-ACC player – and a First Team All-American following his senior year. Ford left Miami with two National Championships – along with the Outland Award and Rimington Trophy.

CUT PLAYERS

Heading into this season our roster was at 76 players – forcing us to cut six from our squad.

No huge talent loss in this crop of roster cuts – we mostly let go of walk ons and roster fillers.

Preseason All-Americans

Charles Cohen – two time Heisman trophy winner – leads the canes on the pre-season All-American list. He is joined by LE Jonas Robinson, CB Brandon Payne, FS Greg Rosario, SS Nick Givens, and RET Gavin Wise. We also have a few players on the second team – LT John Williams, RG Scott Washington, and ROLB Anotinio Mitchell. We have 11 players making an appearance on the preseason All-ACC team, including LOLB Jamal Reid and K Vince Davis.

Heisman Watch List

Charles Cohen is the favorite to win the Heisman – he is hoping to win third of his career – which would match Johnny Manziel for the all time record. Cohen has rushed for 1,500 yards three years in a row. Omar Grant, a senior from West Point, ran for 1,755 yards and 18 TDS in 2018. Alex Jacques threw for 2987 yards and 31 TD in 2018 for the Crimson Tide. Fred Douglas, a junior from Mississippi State threw for 2500+ yards and ran for 1000+ yards last year. Under center for the Nittany lions is junior Adam Thompson, who threw for 3,132 yards and 30 TDS last year.

Schedule

The Hurricanes will once again use their non-conference games to go barnstorming. Here are the marquee matchups the fans in Coral Gables can look forward to in 2019:

The Miami Hurricanes have once again pieced together the toughest non-conference schedule in the nation. If the Canes can navigate through this schedule unscathed they will be able to claim the start of a true dynasty.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 99 OVR

BOLD = Captain

Jay Wheatley replaces former four-year starter Mike Collins at QB. The redshirt junior has been waiting for three years for his shot to lead the Canes on offense. Charles Cohen – the two time Heisman Trophy winner, leads the Canes in the backfield. Alfred Brown and Walter Mathis will be waiting in the wings should anything happen to Cohen. Tommy Hawthorne, Justin Fontaine and Gavin Wise provide Wheatley with a trio of talented seniors at the WR position. John Williams and Scott Washington are the only returning starters on the offensive line – they will be joined by Vince Russell, Bruce Gibson, and David Jones.

DEFENSE – 99 OVR

BOLD = Captain

Jonas Robinson won multiple awards in 2018 – and he is back to lead a strong Hurricane defense in 2019. He is joined by Edgar Wright and Fred Tucker to form a formidable defensive line. Freddie Howard finally gets his shot to start at MLB after transferring from Oklahoma. He is flanked by seniors Jamal Reid and Antonio Mitchell. Our secondary will be one of the best in the nation – led by Nick Givens, winner of the Thorpe award in 2018.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Vince Davis is back for his fourth year as our kicker, and his second year taking on both kicking a punting duties. Gavin Wise is hoping to win his second consecutive returner of the year award in 2019.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

The 2019 recruiting class was ranked 5th in the country – and all players joining the Canes will once again be redshirting this season. David Holly did not take a redshirt season in 2018 – for some reason – so he will take a redshirt year in 2019.

RESULTS

Week 1 – #1 Miami vs #7 Alabama
Cowboys Kickoff Classic
W 42-17
This was a relatively close game until Jonas Robinson forced a fumble with 3:02 left in the 4th quarter. Edgar Wright scooped it up and scored to put the Canes up 35-17. Charles Cohen started off his Heisman campaign with 128 rushing yards and 3 TD in this one.

Week 2 – #1 Miami @ #5 Texas
The Cotton Bowl
W 30-2
4
The Canes offense stalled throughout the first half – and the Longhorns jumped out to a 17-7 lead. Texas continued to lead – starting the 4th quarter up 24-14.

After a long drive, Jay Wheatley scrambled in with 3:14 left to bring the score to within just three points. After a clutch defensive stop the Canes got the ball at their own 20 with 2:09 left. Gavin Wise was the go-to target on this drive, running numerous slants. This set up a seam route to former-QB Nick Weber – who was able to score with just 19 seconds left. The Longhorns had a chance as time ran out – but Nick Givens knocked down the pass in the endzone to seal the 28-24 win.

Week 3 – BYE

Week 4 – #1 Miami vs NC State
W 59-34

This was an offensive showcase for the Miami Hurricanes. Jay Wheatley threw for 358 yards and 4 TD, Charles Cohen ran for 164 yards and 3 TD, and Gavin Wise had 106 yards and a score from the slot.

Week 5 – #2 Miami @ Duke
W 52-28
This was another butt-whooping from the Miami offense. Wheatley threw for 387 yards and 4 TD, while Cohen ran for 140 yards 3 TD. Larry Jones looks to be the next in a long line of great Miami TE’s – he had 150 yards and TD on the day.

Week 6 – #1 Miami vs #18 Georgia Tech
W 28-24

Georgia Tech is always a scary opponent for Miami, and this proved to be a close one. The difference in this game was a play right before halftime. Jay Wheatley found Justin Fontaine on a 60 yard bomb to put the canes up 21-14.

Week 7 – #1 Miami vs Notre Dame
L 27-17
This was a messy game – Miami came into this one underestimating the Fighting Irish – and it proved to be a huge mistake. The Irish were ranked #4 to start the year, and came into this game unranked following a 3-3 start to their season.

The first half was quite sloppy, Notre Dame took a 10-3 lead into the locker room. The second half is where things changed. Notre Dame came out running the Zone Read to perfection. Kevin Davidson led the Irish down the field multiple times. He finished the day with 139 passing yards and 152 rushing yards with 3 total TD.

Jay Wheatley had his worst game yet for the Hurricanes – turning the ball over four times in this game.

Week 8 – #9 Miami vs North Carolina
W 21-20

On the very first drive of the game – Jay Wheatley threw an interception. His play as of late had been uncharacteristic – he found his way to the bench. Derek Smith came in to replace him for a couple of quarters.

This was a sloppy game all around – the Canes turned the ball over six times due to sloppy O-Line play. North Carolina was up 20-14 with 50 seconds left. They went to attempt a field goal to seal their victory. Fred Tucker stretched his arm out for a block – giving Miami a chance. Wheatley helped lead the Canes down the field, and with 7 seconds left he found Gavin Wise in the endzone.

Week 9 – #11 Miami vs #24 Georgia
L 24-21
The first set of BCS rankings came out this week:

  • #1 Ohio State (6-0)
  • #2 Army (7-0)
  • #3 Navy (7-0)
  • #4 Oregon (6-1)
  • #5 Texas (5-1)
  • #6 South Carolina (5-1)
  • #7 Texas A&M (7-0)
  • #8 Virginia Tech (6-0)
  • #9 Clemson (5-1)
  • #10 Stanford (5-1)

This is the first time in years that the Hurricanes have found themselves outside of the initial BCS top 10 – unfortunately they did not do themselves any favors against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Georgia took at early 24-6 lead and it was too much for Miami to overcome. This was a tough loss – and all but sealed our fate that we would not be able to defend our National Championship.

Week 10 – #15 Miami @ Florida State
W 31-24
This was a close game throughout – and it was another one that came down to the final moments. With the score tied at 24 – Charles Cohen was able to punch it in with 10 seconds remaining to put the canes ahead for good.

Week 11 – BYE

Week 12 – #9 Miami @ #15 Virginia Tech
W 59-21
The Canes have clawed their way to #8 in the latest BCS ranking. The U will need some help to make it back into the national championship picture.

This was a statement game for Miami against one of their rivals, and the offense finally started to click again. Jay Wheatley finally looked like himself again, throwing for 300+ yards and 4 TD. Charles Cohen ran the ball 18 times for 146 yards and 4 TD.

Week 13 – #9 Miami vs Virginia
W 42-10

After his 4 TD performance last week, Cohen has creeped his way back onto the Heisman watch list.

Miami remains #8 on the BCS poll – here is the latest:

  • #1 Ohio State (10-0)
  • #2 Texas (8-1)
  • #3 Oregon State (9-1)
  • #4 Washington (8-2)
  • #5 Navy (9-1)
  • #6 Notre Dame (8-3)
  • #7 Army (8-1)
  • #8 Miami (8-2)

The Canes will need to get some help if they hope to play for another title. As it stands – we are projected to play Army in the Orange Bowl.

Jay Wheatley had a career day against Virginia. He threw for 488 yards and set the school record for passing school record for passing TD with 7. Wheatley connected with Gavin Wise for 143 yards and 2 TD.

The Canes defense was also dominant. Due to injuries – Virginia started FB Thad Fitch at RT. Jonas Robinson took advantage of that – the LE had 4 sacks on the day.

Week 14 – #7 Miami vs #21 Pitt
W 37-34 OT
We still need lots of help to find our way into the BCS championship. Miami continues to creep up in the rankings, and is not #7 thanks to an Ohio State loss last week.

One week we blow a team out, the next week we battle until the end. Consistency continues to be an issue for Miami in 2019. One of the bright spots in this one was the play of Jonas Robinson. The defensive end set the single season school record for sacks. It took two overtimes in this one, but Miami came away with another victory.

Week 15 – BYE
We have moved up ever so slightly again in the BCS rankings.

  • #1 – Texas (10-1)
  • #2 – Navy (10-1)
  • #3 Notre Dame (9-3)
  • #4 Army (10-1)
  • #5 Miami (10-2)

Despite being ranked #5 in the latest BCS poll, it is just about impossible for the Miami Hurricanes to find their way into the National Championship this year. Charles Cohen is once again the favorite to win the Heisman – a strong performance in the ACC championship should guarantee his third Heisman trophy.

Conference Championship Week
The BCS standings prior to conference championship games are below – teams are listed next to their conference championship opponent.

  • #1 Army (11-1)
  • #2 Texas (11-1)
  • #3 Notre Dame (9-3)
  • #4 Miami (10-2)

With the way things are set up – we are the only team to play for a conference championship. There was no Big 12 Championship when this thing was created in 2013. I do not see a path for the Hurricanes to make it to the National Championship. Our early win over now #2 Texas was all but erased with our losses to #3 Notre Dame and Georgia. We are looking at an Army vs Texas National Championship.

ACC Championship
#4 Miami vs #21 Boston College
W 56-14

The Canes got off to a hot start in the ACC Championship. The offense scored a quick TD at the hands of Charles Cohen. That was followed by a pick 6 from Clint Taylor – giving Miami a quick 14-0 lead. By the time halftime came around the score was 42-7. Charles Cohen finished his day with 5 rushing TD.

BCS Bowls
At the end of the regular season – the BCS rankings are:

  • #1 Army
  • #2 Texas
  • #3 Notre Dame
  • #4 Miami
  • #5 Texas A&M
  • #6 Navy
  • #7 Oregon State
  • #8 Virginia Tech
  • #9 Ohio State

  • Rose Bowl – #9 Ohio State vs #12 Washington
  • Fiesta Bowl – #3 Notre Dame vs #5 Texas A&M
  • Sugar Bowl – #10 South Carolina vs Louisville
  • Orange Bowl – #4 Miami vs #6 Navy
  • BCS National Championship – #1 Army vs #2 Texas

Bowl Season
The Orange Bowl
#4 Miami (11-2) vs #6 Navy (10-2)

W 49-30

The Canes opened the Orange Bowl up by scoring on a pass from Jay Wheatley to Gavin Wise – his school record 13th receiving TD. At halftime the Hurricanes had a 21-14 lead.

In the end, Navy was unable to stop the rushing attack from Miami. Charles Cohen was the player of the game. He finished his day with 227 yards and a TD. Alfred Brown also showed some flashes of brilliance out of the backfield – he ran for 77 yards and 2 TD on just three attempts.

HEISMAN

Garrett Browning from Ohio State University ran away with the Heisman Trophy in 2019. His passing was not the most impressive – but he swayed the voters with nearly 1,000 rushing yards and 11 rushing TD. Browning collected 2,196 total points on the 2019 ballot – including 640 first place votes. He surpassed the second place finisher by 1,325 points.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Jay Wheatley set the school record of 3,998 yards – passing Mike Collins 2016 mark of 3,931. He also set the TD record for Miami of 38 TD – surpassing the 34 TD by Collins in 2016.

Charles Cohen cemented himself in the NCAA record books this season. He set the all time career rushing yards mark set by Ron Dayne of Wisconsin (’99). Cohen also broke Montee Ball’s (Wisconsin – ’12) record for career rushing TD – setting the new mark at 96.

Gavin Wise broke Robert Swain’s (2016) school record for receptions – setting the new mark at 74. Wise was also able to set another single season record at Miami by scoring his 14th receiving TD – Leonard Hankerson (’10) had the previous record of 13 TD.

Jonas Robinson set a new single season record for sacks – set all the way back in 1986 by Danny Stubbs. Robinson was also able to surpass the career sacks record at Miami – also set by Stubbs. Antonio Mitchell led the country in tackles in 2019.

Vince Davis finished off a solid career at The U with a decent senior season – his 59 yard field goal was the longest of the year.

Gavin Wise took home the Returner of the Year Award – again!

RECRUITING

The Hurricanes have their 6th straight top 10 recruiting class, although this is their worst recruiting class since 2014.

The coaches did pretty well with the top of this recruiting class – bringing in three of the top ten national prospects. Marcus Carrington was a huge get for the Canes – they battled other in-state powerhouses for the defensive end. Garret Murphy out of Missouri is a fantastic athlete across the board, the questions is – where will they play him in Coral Gables?

The Miami coaching staff was able to bring in nine student athletes from Florida. The rest of their recruiting plan was relatively spread out – it would be nice to see them focus on a specific region in with the 2021 class.

COACHING CHANGES

Only one coordinators from Miami was on the move this offseason – breaking the usual trend of both coaches finding head coaching roles. Jimbo Fisher accepted the HC position at Bowling Green. Mark Dantonio will return for another season as our DC. Les Koenning from Mississippi State will take over the OC duties.

NEXT YEAR

Although we were able to win 10 games for our sixth year in a row – we were unable to grab that third straight national championship. Finishing #2 is not good enough at Miami – their sights are set on a National Championship in 2020.

Clash With Coyote: How I Fought Off a Wild Animal With My Bare Hands to Protect My Dog

My dog has MANY health issues. Once in a while the poor little girl will battle with diarrhea. She is pretty good at waking me up and not having an accident in the house. Last night around 3:30 AM I heard a few whimpers from her – I threw on my coat, put on her harness, and we were off.

We usually take this path in between houses along our walk. There is a staircase with grassy areas – a pretty nice and secluded spot for a dog to take a dump. My dog decided that this was a good place to squat and pee – our walk would continue after this.

As my dog was concluding her piss, she scooted in front of me with her butt to the ground quickly – like she heard something behind us. She was scared. I turned around and heard something moving around in this tall grass. It arose from the grass, silhouetted by the moon – A COYOTE.

A few months ago, I woke up to the sound of a couple of coyotes tearing apart a cat in front of my house. It was horrifying.

Anyways, back to my story – there I am, 3:30 AM, wearing socks with flip flops (it’s a lifestyle choice I am proud of), camo sweats, and my purple East Carolina jacket. How in the hell am I going to protect my dog from this thing? My body reacts – fight or flight – and I let our the most guttural “RRRAAAAAAAARRRGH!” that I am able to muster. The coyote scooted off to the left, and me and my dog turn back quickly to head home.

Just as I wrap up the most animalistic growl my body can produce I see a man turn the corner. He looks pretty confused. It took me a few seconds to make the connection. Oh no, he took his dog out to the bathroom at the same time as me – I just screamed at his dog.

We had a good laugh about – nice meeting your Michael.

  • Virginia Tech beat Clemson in the ACC championship game.
  • JT Barrett from Ohio State won the Heisman Trophy.
  • Miami defeated Ohio State 28-24 in the BCS title game.

RECENT HISTORY

The Miami Hurricanes have won ten or more games four years in a row. Last season was our best year so far, capped off with a BCS National Championship win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Coach History

I have been in charge of this program for five seasons now. Our team has a 54-13 record during that span. Against top 25 opponents we hold an 18-6 record, including 4-1 in bowl games.

CUT PLAYERS

Heading into this season our roster was at 74 players – forcing us to cut just four from our squad.

Our biggest loss was the 10th best prospect in our recent recruiting class – Will Clark. The thee-star strong safety out of Mississippi was unable to impress our staff and will need to find a roster spot elsewhere.

Joining those three players on the All-ACC team are Chris Ford, Vince Davis, John Williams, and Marcus Wilson.

Heisman Watch List

George Ball, a senior runningback from the University of Oregon, is the early favorite to win the Heisman trophy. Ball ran for 1,403 yards and 13 TDs during his junior campaign. Iowa State senior HB Sean Lamb is also on the watchlist, running for 1,888 yards and 23 TDs in 2017. Redshirt senior Eddie Turner from Stanford received national attention with his 1,393 yards and 12 TDs last year. The lone QB with decent early odds is Nick Levine from Clemson – in 2017 he threw for 3,004 yards and 31 TDs.

Schedule

The Hurricanes will once again use their non-conference games to go barnstorming. They will play games in Reliant Stadium, AT&T Stadium, and The Georgia Dome.

The Advocare Texas Kickoff – Reliant Stadium

The rest of the 2018 schedule can be seen below:

The Miami Hurricanes have once again pieced together the toughest non-conference schedule in the nation. Neutral site games against Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Notre Dame are tough enough – add to that a road game in Gainesville agaisnt the rival Florida Gators.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 99 OVR

BOLD = Captain

The Miami Hurricanes are led on offense by Mike Collins at QB. This will be his 4th season starting for the Canes. Collins has a history of lingering injuries – Jay Wheatley will be first in line to replace collins should anything happen. Charles Cohen will once again pair with Joe Simpson and Andre Wise at HB this season. Cohen will be the lead back once again, and he is hoping to return to the national spotlight after a down year in 2017. Aaron Pittman replaces Gus Edwards at FB – he may prove to be a more versatile weapon from the FB position. At receiver, Brandon Cade and Tommy Hawthorne will start for us, with Justin Fontaine and Gavin Wise alternating in the slot. Zachary Harper finally gets his chance to start at TE – he has big shoes to fill with Robert Swain now playing in the NFL. The captain of our OL is Chris Ford – who is entering his 4th year starting for us at C. Marcus Wilson and John Williams are the other returning starters on our OL – Scott Washington and Billy Cruz will start for the Canes on the right side of the line.

DEFENSE – 99 OVR

BOLD = Captain

We have five returning starters on defense. Jonas Robinson moves over to LE after starting at RE last season – he will be our primary threat to get to the QB. Our other returning starters are Cole Dickson, Jermaine Meyer, Cameron Williams, and Damien Fountain. Jamal Reid was the primary backup LB last season – he makes the move to RE in 2018. At ROLB, Antonio Mitchell beat out James Wade for the starting spot.

Our secondary is much younger than last season – but still in good shape. Fountain is the leader of the group – Mike Robinson will start alongside him at CB. Greg Rosario moves from CB to get the start at FS, and Nick Givens is finally getting a chance to start at SS after backing up Artie Burns and Jamal Carter last year.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Vince Davis is taking on a huge role with special teams this year, not only is he our kicker, he also has to replace Antoine Dotson as our punter in 2018.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

The 2018 recruiting class was ranked 7th in the country – and all players joining the Canes will be redshirting this season. Freddie Howard is also forced to take a year off after transferring to Miami from Oklahoma.

W 27-24

The Miami Hurricanes are playing in their second consecutive BCS National Championship game. The Canes have won 20 consecutive games – dating all the way back to their Week 5 overtime loss to Virginia tech in 2017.

The South Carolina Gamecocks stormed through the SEC this year, beating ranked teams like #4 Georgia, #12 Alabama, #18 Vanderbilt – and even #13 Clemson in an out of conference rivalry game. On offense the Gamecocks are led by Redshirt Junior Quarterback Chris Robbins – who passed for 3,300 yards and 36 TD with 6 INT.

Despite being ranked #2 in the BCS standings – the Canes should be the heavy favorite in this one. They are led on offense by Charles Cohen, who was just awarded his second Heisman Trophy. Along with Cohen, Miami had eleven other players on the All-American team.

Miami scored on their first possession – Mike Collins connected with FB Aaron Pittman on a 58 yard TD pass. This was all made possible by a huge play on 4th and 2, when Collins scrambled for a first down to keep the drive alive.

South Carolina responded with a steady drive down the field – capped off by a Chris Robbins touchdown run from two yards out.

Miami drove down the field – only to be picked off on 2nd and goal. Jared Fulton took the interception 94 yards the other way, giving the Gamecocks a 14-7 lead.

After another great drive down the field – the Canes once again turned the ball over – Mike Collins fumbled the ball away on the five yard line. Collins was also injured on the play and left for the locker room with a bruised knee.

The Miami defense made a huge stand. Nick Givens took down the South Carolina ball carrier for a safety with 0:54 left in the half. After receiving the punt, Jay Wheatley led the Canes down the field to South Carolina’s 20 yard line. Mike Collins returned to the game following a timeout. After getting the Canes to the 5 yard line – Collins turned the ball over once again. South Carolina ran out the clock and took a 14-9 lead into the locker room.

South Carolina started with the ball in the second half. They extended their lead with a field goal to go up 17-9.

Miami started their drive, and Collins once again left injured – with a bruised shoulder this time. Jay Wheatley drove the squad down the field – and they were finally able to punch it in on a one yard Charles Cohen plunge. The Canes tied the game when they went for two and converted with a Wheatley to Gavin Wise slant pass. The score was now 17-17 with 0:54 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Miami defense made a stop – and Gavin Wise returned a punt 40 yards to give the Canes the ball back at the South Carolina 33 yard line. On 3rd and 8, Collins connected with Joe Simpson on a 20 yard wheel route to go up 24-17.

The Gamecocks responded with a touchdown of their own – with Chris Robbins connecting with Ty George on a 14 yard TD with 2:32 left in the game.

Miami received the kickoff and started their drive off hot – Mike Collins scrambled for 35 yards to get the ball to the South Carolina 42 yard line. On 3rd and 8 – Collins completed a pass to Brandon Cade for a first down. Collins injured his back in the process and was out for the rest of the game.

Jay Wheately took over with 1:32 left and the ball on the South Carolina 31 yard line. Miami ran the clock down and got the ball up to the 26 yard line with 0:04 left in the BCS National Championship Game. Vince Davis nailed the 43 yard field goal to win the game for the Canes as time expired, giving them a 27-24 win – and a second consecutive national title.

Mike Collins was named the player of the game – while Jay Wheatley was impressive in his absence, going 7/8 with 87 yards.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Despite all of his lingering injuries, Mike Collins finished his Miami career with a solid season. Collins also broke two school records during his 2018 season. He surpassed Brad Kaaya’s (’16) record for career passing yards which was set at 9,968 yards – it now stands at 11,217 yards. Ken Dorsey’s (’02) record of 86 passing touchdowns was also bested – and the record is set at 96.

Charles Cohen had a great season – winning his second Heisman Trophy. He set the Miami single season rushing TD record, scoring 30 times in 2018. Cohen also surpassed the career record of 4,951 yards that was set by Duke Johnson (’15). Mike Collins was an incredible dual-threat QB for the Canes, rushing for 660 yards and 6 TD. Joe Simpson had his best season yet, averaging 7.7 yards per carry.

We were able to replace a Mackey Award winning TE with another award winning TE in 2018. Zach Harper was impressive in his only year starting – accumulating 1,262 receiving yards in the process. Justin Fontaine ended up as our most reliable receiver – hauling in 48 catches for 604 yards and 5 TD.

Cameron Williams went off in 2018 – nearly doubling his total tackles (43) from the year before. Jonas Robinson was unstoppable at LE – tying Danny Stubbs (’86) for most sacks in a single season at Miami. Nick Givens went from a relatively unknown to winning the Jim Thorpe Award.

Our kicking game was great in 2018 – and Vince Davis proved to be clutch for the Canes. He made a career long 61 yard field goal, along with a game winning kick in the BCS National Championship.

Gavin Wise took home the Returner of the Year Award – just one more in the long line of returners winning awards for the Hurricanes.

RECRUITING

The class of 2019 is incredibly top heavy. A select few of our signings are the best in the class – while others will be long term projects.

The prize of this group is the #1 prospect in the country, John Brown. Although listed as an athlete, Brown is likely to follow in the footsteps of another #1 overall prospect (Mike Collins) and play QB for the Hurricanes. Willie Rogers and Steve Little may prove to be two of the more impactful recruits from this class – they will be fighting for playing time as early as next year. Tim Smith is another highly touted recruit – he will hopefully find his way into the backfield rotation in 2020.

The Miami coaching staff brought their focus closer to home for this recruiting class. It would be nice to see them develop more of a stronghold in southeast states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

TRANSFERS

There were no transfers in or out following the 2018 season.

NFL DRAFT

Mike Collins – QB – 1st Round
Brandon Cade – WR – 2nd Round
Andre Wise – HB – 3rd Round
Danny Johnson – QB – 4th Round
Cameron Williams – MLB – 4th Round
Chris Ford – C – 5th Round
Joe Simpson – HB – 5th Round
Jermaine Meyer – LOLB – 5th Round

A few Hurricanes that found limited playing time during their careers at Miami were taken in the 2019 NFL Draft. Andre Wise found himself behind Charles Cohen and Joe Simpson his entire career, but was still taken in the 3rd Round. Danny Johnson, who played himself out of the backup role during the 2017 season – was taken in the 4th round. This is a good sign for recruits – even if you don’t play a significant number of snaps you can still get drafted from The U.

COACHING CHANGES

The coordinators from Miami were once again on the move this offseason. Bob Stoops was hired as the new head coach at Michigan State, while Clarence McKinney is now the head coach at Ole Miss. Miami brought in Jimbo Fisher from Florida State to be the new OC, and Mark Dantonio from Michigan State to be the new DC.

NEXT YEAR

Five straight 10 win seasons and back-to-back National Championships. Is this the new normal in Coral Gables?

Building A Dynasty: The 2017 Miami Hurricanes

RECAPPING 2016

  • The Miami Hurricanes finished the 2016 season with a 12-2 record.
  • Miami lost to North Carolina State in the ACC championship game.
  • Charles Cohen from the University of Miami won the Heisman Trophy.
  • Nebraska defeated NC State in the BCS title game.

Follow the links to catch up on previous seasons; 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

RECENT HISTORY

The Miami Hurricanes have won ten or more games in the past three seasons. Our best season during my time as the head coach was in 2015, when we went 13-1 and won the ACC championship along with the Orange Bowl.

CUT PLAYERS

Heading into this season our roster was at 81 players – forcing us to cut 11 from our squad.

The most talented player we had to let go was Sam Clarke – a four star QB from the class of 2015. While he is rated at 86 overall, he would have slotted in as the 6th QB on our depth chart. We also let go of three four-star recruits from our 2017 recruiting class; Jeff Goss, Kenneth White, and Glenn Bryant.

PRE SEASON

We once again have multiple players on the pre-season All-American team. Charles Cohen leads the group – the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. Mackey Award winner Robert Swain is also a pre-season All-American. On the defensive side of the ball, Alex Figueroa is joined by Al Quadin Muhammed and Artie Burns on the pre-season All-American team. Lou Groza Award recipient Vince Davis is also on the squad. Joining our pre-season All-Americans on the pre-season All-ACC team are Joe Simpson, Stacy Coley, Jermaine Grace, and Antoine Dotson.

Heisman Watch List

Charles Cohen from the University of Miami is looking to win his second consecutive Heisman trophy in 2017 – last season he rushed for 1,885 yards and 22 TD. Adam Taylor from Nebraska is another player on the watch list – the redshirt senior ran for 1,425 yards and 13 TD last season. LSU’s Josh Sanders ran for 1,694 yards and 17 touchdowns as a redshirt junior in 2016. Redshirt junior Antoine McConnell out of the University of Michigan ran for 1,555 yards and 13 TD last season. From Rutgers, redshirt senior Chris Laviano threw for 3,228 yards and 33 TD last season.

Schedule

Instead of taking the easy route like #2 Virginia Tech and scheduling cupcakes – the #4 Miami Hurricanes have gone out and scheduled the toughest non-conference games possible. All of these non-conference games will take place at neutral sites.

The Advocare Texas Kickoff – Reliant Stadium
#1 NEbraska vs #4 Miami

We open our season against the #1 team and defending National Champion – the Nebraska Cornhuskers. This neutral site game will take place at the home of the Houston Texans – Reliant Stadium.

Met Life Stadium
#4 Miami vs #7 USC

Our Week 2 game is against the #7 USC Trojans. This will be a unique matchup – both teams have agreed to play this game at MetLife Stadium – the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.

Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game – Georgia Dome
#4 Miami vs #5 Georgia

Our final neutral site non-conference game will take place in the Georgia Dome for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game – where we will take on the #5 Georgia Bulldogs.

The rest of the 2017 schedule can be seen below:

On top of our non-conference games with Nebraska, USC, and Georgia – our final non-conference game will be our season finale. We will take on the Florida Gators in week 14.

Our schedule is really different this year. We do not play a game at home until week 6 against #2 Virginia Tech. The other notable change – our non-divisional conference opponent is now Maryland – who replaces Clemson on our schedule.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 99 OVR

BOLD = Captain

We return seven starters on offense this season. Stacy Coley was our slot receiver last season – he is our #1 WR this year. Brandon Cade and Tommy Hawthorne will be our other big threats at receiver. Alex Gall finally gets to start this season at LT – he was a backup the past few seasons. On the opposite side of the line, sophomore John Williams starts for us at RT.

Charles Cohen returns as our lead back this year – he will be supported by Joe Simpson and Andre Wise. Mike Collins is back for his third season starting under center. Along with Collins, we have elite depth at QB – all four guys behind him on the depth chart would start elsewhere. Gus Edwards is back for his fourth season starting at FB – he is our team captain on the offensive side of the ball. The always consistent Robert Swain is back for his senior year at TE – he passed up an opportunity to get drafted to play another season for the Canes.

DEFENSE – 99 OVR

BOLD = Captain

Alex Figueroa, Al Quadin Muhammed, and Jermaine Grace will be the pillars of our defense in 2017. Muhammed makes a position move once again – hoping to fill in for the great Earl Moore at DT. Cameron Williams replaces Raphael Kirby at MLB – Williams transferred over from Notre Dame and is eligible to play this season. Jonas Robinson – a five-star OLB from the class of 2016 – makes the move to RE after a redshirt season last year. Williams will team up with Jermaine Grace and Jermaine Meyer to form our linebacking core. Meyer – the former JUCO standout – took a redshirt last season to learn our system.

Our secondary is full of upperclassmen, many of which have yet to play much. Artie Burns makes the move from CB to SS. Jamal Carter will start at FS after sitting behind Larry Hope for years. Our starting corners will be Damien Fountain along with Corn Elder. Underclassmen Mike Robinson and Greg Rosario will be waiting in the wings should anyone struggle in our secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Miami Hurricanes have one of the best groups of Special Teams players in the country. Vince Davis and Antoine Dotson have received plenty of accolades during their time at The U. Stacy Coley hopes to join Phillip Dorsett and Herb Waters as the next great return man at Miami.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

We were able to sign our best recruiting class to date in 2017. While all of the players from this class will redshirt this season, there are a number of players that have exciting futures in our program. Of all of the players in this group – the most likely to see playing time in 2018 will be Chris Taylor, Andrew Spencer, and Reggie Johnson.

RESULTS

Week 1 – #4 Miami vs #1 Nebraska
The Advocare Texas Kickoff – Reliant Stadium
W 49-17
The Miami Hurricanes open the season agaisnt the #1 team and defending national champion. This is the national game of the week – Kirk Herbstreit has the Canes coming out on top.

These two teams have played 12 games against each other – splitting the series with six wins apiece. The most memorable game in recent history was the 2002 Rose Bowl – a game Miami won 37-14 – leading to their last national championship.

Nebraska comes into this game with two returning 1,000 rushers – Adam Taylor (1,425 YDS) and Terrell Newby (1,001 YDS). It is unclear who will start for them at QB coming into this. They have two seniors fighting for the job – Johnny Stanton and Damon Greenwood.

Miami drove down the field and scored easily on their first possession. Mike Collins connected with Tommy Hawthorne for a 33 yard TD.

The Hurricanes were dominant on both sides of the ball. Damien Fountain was elite at corner – helping extend the lead to 28-0 after a pick six. Going into halftime the Hurricanes led 35-0 following Hawthorne’s second receiving touchdowns of the half. Nebraska had just -5 yards of total offense in the first half.

Collins ended the day with 249 yards and 3 TDs through the air. Robert Swain hauled in 7 receptions for 126 yards and a score – Hawthorne had 4 catches for 64 yards and 2 TDs. Charles Cohen ran for 119 yards and a TD while Joe Simpson had 2 rushing touchdowns of his own.

Our defense had seven sacks on the day – led by Alex Figueroa who had two sacks on his own.

Week 2 – #1 Miami vs #6 USC
MetLife Stadium
W 38-10

The Trojans came into this with all of the talent in the world on offense – but they were no match for the Miami defense. Damien Fountain had two interceptions in this game.. On offense, Mike Collins was electric – passing for 302 yards and 2 TDs. Charles Cohen had another 100+ yard day out of the backfield.

Week 3 – #1 Miami vs #11 Georgia
Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game – Georgia Dome
W 24-16

This is the first time that these two teams have met since 1966. The The Hurricanes had a tough start in this one, Mike Collins threw an interception on Miami’s first offensive play. Luckily for the Canes their defense was able to carry them. Alex Figueroa went off with a school record of 4 sacks.

Week 4 – #1 Miami vs Pitt
W 48-14
The Miami Hurricanes dominated their ACC opener from the start. They went into halftime with 31-0, thanks in part to four interceptions in the first half.

Robert Swain had a big day, setting the career receiving yards record. He passed Santana Moss – who collected 2,546 yards from 1997-2000. Swain finished the game with 122 yards and 2 TD.

Week 5 – #1 Miami vs Duke
W 52-13
Mike Collins has impressed the nation with his play so far and finds himself in contention for the Heisman – along with teammate Charles Cohen.

While two players on offense are getting national media attention – our defense led the way again in this one. Corn Elder had two interceptions – his teammates added another three by the end of this one.

Week 6 – #1 Miami @ #2 Virginia Tech
L 48-41 OT

The biggest game of the year – #1 vs #2. The big news out of Coral Gables is that of the injury to Mike Collins – who strained his back against Duke. He will be out for 10 weeks.

To make this game even more dramatic – the Canes had seven big time prospects visiting for this rivalry game.

Miami got off to a terrible start – Charles Cohen fumbled on his first carry of the game. The Hokies scooped the ball up and ran it all the way back for a touchdown to grab an early 7-0 lead. By halftime Virginia Tech was up 31-13.

The Hurricanes continued to claw back throughout the second half – Stacy Coley returned a kick 101 yards for a touchdown. With 4:51 left in the game, Robert Swain scored to bring the Hurricanes within seven points. The Miami defense was able to shut down the Hokies and get the ball back. After a long drive, Danny Johnson was able to scramble in and tie it up at 41-41 with 0:51 left in the game.

Virginia tech ran the ball right up the middle to score on their first play of overtime. During Miami’s possession, Danny Johnson was picked off by Yannick Ngoukwe to seal the game for the Hokies.

Week 7 – BYE
The Miami Hurricanes are now ranked #8.

Week 8 – #6 Miami vs North Carolina
W 38-28

The Canes relied on heavily on their rushing attack in this game. Charles Cohen collected 125 yards on 25 attempts for 3 TDs, while Joe Simpson had 2 TDs of his own.

Week 9 – #4 Miami vs #20 Virginia
W 28-3
Miami has gone in a new direction at the QB position this week. Danny Johnson fumbled the ball twice last game – he has turned the ball over four times during his two games under center. Nick Weber gets his first start for the Canes at QB.

The first set of BCS rankings came out this week:

  • #1 Ohio State (6-0)
  • #2 Florida (7-0)

  • #7 Notre Dame (6-1) – loss to USC
  • #8 Tulsa (8-0)
  • #9 Virginia Tech (5-1) – loss to Army
  • #10 Rutgers (4-1) – loss to UCLA

The offense was not as electric as one would have hoped with Nick Weber under center – he has a similar skillset to Mike Collins, but just isn’t quite as talented. On defense, Greg Rosario collected the first pick six of his young career.

Week 10 – #4 Miami @ FSU
W 28-24
The QB position at Miami is anything but certain at this point in the season. Mike Collins is expected to miss another 6 weeks. Nick Weber will get the start against the Seminoles – with Derek Smith or Jay Wheatley getting a shot should he struggle.

This was a close one down to the wire. With 0:14 left in the game, Gus Edwards was able to run it in to put the Canes up 28-24. Nick Weber threw for 253 yards and a TD with and INT. Weber also collected a rushing TD.

Robert Swain had a milestone moment happen in this game – surpassing Michael Irvin’s career touchdown record of 26 that was set in 1987.

Week 13 – #2 Miami vs Maryland
W 21-14

Despite having much less talent than Miami – Maryland was able to keep this game close until the final seconds. Tommy Hawthorne proved to be a reliable target for Wheatley – collecting 11 receptions for 127 yards and 2 TD.

Week 14 – #2 Miami vs #21 Florida
W 17-10
The Miami Hurricanes faced the Florida Gators in what was likely to be their last game prior to bowl season. Virginia Tech had the tiebreaker for the ACC Coastal division – after beating the Canes earlier this season. A Virginia Tech loss to Virginia would give the Canes a spot in the ACC Championship game.

Miami managed find themselves on the winning end of another one score game. Both offenses struggled, but the Canes were able to pull ahead in the final minute. Joe Simpson ran the ball in from 15 yards out to put the Hurricanes up 17-10. Greg Rosario intercepted a Hail Mary attempt from the Gators in the final seconds to seal the win.

Week 15 – BYE

Conference Championship Week
The BCS standings prior to conference championship games are below – teams are listed next to their conference championship opponent.

  • #1 Ohio State (12-0) vs #12 Minnesota (9-3)
  • #2 Miami (11-1)
  • #3 Notre Dame (10-1)
  • #4 Texas A&M (10-2)
  • #5 Virginia Tech (10-2) vs #11 Clemson (9-3)
  • #6 USC (9-3) vs Stanford (7-5)
  • #7 South Carolina (9-3) vs #9 Alabama (9-3)
  • #8 Rutgers (10-2)
  • #9 Alabama (9-3) vs #7 South Carolina (9-3)
  • #10 Oklahoma State (9-3)

As far as storylines go – I don’t see a path for any teams to jump the Miami Hurricanes for a spot in the National Championship. Miami appears to have lucked out by losing to Virginia Tech earlier in the season, rather than playing for the ACC title – the Hurricanes get an extra week off.

BCS Bowls

At the end of the regular season – the BCS rankings are:

  • #1 Ohio State
  • #2 Miami
  • #3 Virginia Tech

  • BCS National Championship – #1 Ohio State vs #2 Miami

Bowl Season – BCS National Championship
The Rose Bowl
#1 Ohio State (13-0) vs #2 Miami (11-1)

The big story coming into the BCS National Championship – Mike Collins is healthy and ready to play. He appeared in Miami’s first five games of the season – before being inactive due to a back injury.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are lead by Heisman winner JT Barrett at QB. Additionally on offense, Ezekiel Elliot is the lead back in their system, with over 1500 yards this year. Joey Bosa leads the team on defense.

The last time Miami faced Ohio State was to open the 2016 regular season. The Hurricanes lost that game to the Buckeyes 45-42.

We have a BCS National Championship featuring the #1 offense vs the #1 defense. The Buckeyes average 504.5 yards per game on offense, while the Hurricanes only allow 262.3 yards per game on defense. Based on the numbers – Ohio State appears to be more balanced.

Miami received the opening kickoff and had a fantastic opening drive – only to waste it by giving the ball away in the red zone. On third and long Mike Collins floated a pass over the middle, and it was intercepted. Ohio State capitalized and drove right down the field to score on their first possession – getting out to a 7-0 lead.

Miami matched Ohio State with a touchdown of their own – ran in from a couple yards out by Charles Cohen. Ohio State answered back with a field goal to go up 10-7. Miami drove down the field and scored on a Gus Edwards fullback dive to go up 14-10 with 0:17 left in the first half.

Miami shut down Ohio State on their opening drive of the second half. The Canes drove down the field on a 13 play, 56 yard drive – milking 4:14 off the clock. This drive was capped off by another Gus Edwards fullback dive, this one on 4th and goal. Miami was up 21-10.

The Buckeyes answered with a long drive of their own – 9 plays for 79 yards. David Pearson ran it in for Ohio State. The Buckeyes went for two and the pass fell incomplete – the score was 21-16.

Miami responded with a 7 play 58 yard drive – scoring on a Mike Collins pass to Robert Swain. The Canes were up 28-16.

The Ohio State Buckeyes answered back once again – this time on a pass from JT Barrett to Dre Yancy. The 30 yard TD brought the score to 28-24.

Fortunately for the Hurricanes – they were able to recover the onside kick attempt. After a few clutch runs from Charles Cohen – the Canes were able to run out the clock.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Robert Swain set the school career reception mark at 177. Also the career receiving yards 3351. and touchdowns at 28

Mike Collins was able to set the NCAA record for highest QB rating in a single season – beating the previous record set by Marcus Mariota (202.3). Given his small sample size due to injury, it is hard to take that record from Collins too seriously.

They rest of our quarterbacks had decent seasons. Danny Johnson and Jay Wheatley put up similar passing numbers – Nick Weber was the least accurate, but most versatile of the group.

Charles Cohen proved to be a workhorse again for the Hurricanes. He was unable to match his numbers from his Heisman winning season – but still ran for a solid 1,511 yards and 15 TDs. Joe Simpson once again had limited carries, but found himself in the endzone often. Mike Collins proved to be quite the dual-threat QB – finding the endzone five times on the ground.

Robert Swain re-wrote the Miami record books this season. He is now the all-time leader in receptions (177), receiving yards (3,351), and receiving touchdowns (28) at the University of Miami. The previous record holders were Reggie Wayne (173 receptions), Santana Moss (2,546 yards) and Michael Irvin (26 TD).

Tommy Hawthorne had a solid season for us – and was a consistent threat in the red zone. Brandon Cade was another reliable receiver. It will be interesting to see what Cade and Hawthorne are able to achieve next season.

Alex Figueroa was the leader of the defense this year and he proved why – winning two national awards in the process. Figueroa put up 13 sacks – which would be 5th all time in the Miami record books.

Vince Davis had another solid season for us – although not quite to the level of his 2017 season – but still good.

Stacy Coley followed in the footsteps of those before him – taking home the Returner. of the Year award.

RECRUITING

This was an off year for our recruiting class. We seem to have a pattern going where we fall off a bit after bringing in the #1 class. Signing the #7 class is nothing to be upset about though.

This group is headlined by three five-star talents – David Holly, Alex Powell, and David Jones. Powell initially comes in as a WR prospect – but our coaching staff is hoping to put his 6’7″ frame to use as a TE in the future. Holly and Jones hope to make an impact on our offensive line in the next couple of years.

While our staff did a good job of signing prospects from many different states – they neglected to recruit the state of Florida. If we want to build a dynasty, we have to make sure we sign in-state talent.

TRANSFERS

Justin Jones transferred to Wake Forest. He slated to be the punter for the Hurricanes for the next four seasons. Really odd decision for Jones to make – and he leaves a big hole for us to fill in our roster.

COACHING CHANGES

Once again – both of our coordinators accepted positions elsewhere. I fully expected that to happen after winning a National Championship. Our DC Gary Anderson has accepted the head coaching job at Air Force. Warren Ruggerio, our OC, will now be in charge of the Ohio Bobcats.

Clarence McKinney comes in as our new OC. He was the head coach at West Virginia last season – he was fired for poor performance. Our new DC is Bob Stoops – he was let go after a sub-par season at Oklahoma.

NEXT YEAR

We capped off our fourth straight 10 win season with a National Championship. The expectation is now set – compete for the ACC title and a National Championship every single year. We return a number of starters in 2018 – are the Hurricanes poised to win back-to-back titles?

Building A Dynasty: The 2016 Miami Hurricanes

RECAPPING 2015

  • The Miami Hurricanes finished the 2015 season with a 13-1 record while going undefeated in the ACC.
  • Miami beat North Carolina State in the ACC championship game.
  • Bri’onte Dunn from Ohio State won the Heisman Trophy.
  • Ohio State beat up on Stanford in the BCS title game.

If you want to read more in depth about previous seasons – click here to read about 2013, click here to read about 2014, and click here to read about 2015.

Is 2016 the year the Canes win it all?

CUT PLAYERS

We have had a ton of interest in our program with all of the recent success we have had. All of that interest has led to far too many players on our roster – forcing us to once again cut down to 70 players.

Last year we let go of multiple four star recruits when it came time to make our cuts. This year our biggest loss of talent is that of three star DT Nate O’Brien.

PRE SEASON

We start the year off with four pre-season All-Americans – all on the defensive side of the ball; Al Quadin Muhammed, Earl Moore, Raphael Kirby and Nate Dortch. Those four players are joined by D’Mauri Jones, Robert Swain, Jermaine Grace, Antonio Crawford, Larry Hope and Antoine Dotson on the pre-season All-ACC team.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are #1 in the preseason polls – following their National Championship last year. The Oregon Ducks are #2 after defeating Virginia Tech in the Rose Bowl. The Miami Hurricanes come in at #3 with ACC rival Virginia Tech right behind them at #4. The Stanford Cardinal round out the top 5.

Schedule

The Miami Hurricanes have been critiqued for having an easy out of conference schedule the past few seasons. As a response – we have accepted an invite to the Cowboys Kickoff Classic to open our season – against defending National Champion and #1 ranked Ohio State.

The Miami Hurricanes have faced the Ohio State Buckeyes five times prior to this game – the last coming in 2011. Miami won that game in 2011 by a score of 24-6 – however, Ohio State has the overall series lead 3-2. The most memorable game in this series was in 2003 when the refs screwed Miami out of a National Championship when Ohio State defeated Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

The rest of the 2016 schedule can be seen below:

Green = Home, Orange = Road, Blue = Neutral

Following the game against the Buckeyes we travel to The Swamp to take on the #6 Florida Gators. They currently have a three game winning streak against us – with a combined score of 167-41. We then go on the road to complete our home-and-home agreement with the UL-Lafayette Rajin’ Cajuns. Our non-conference schedule ends with the #19 USF Bulls coming to town with new head coach – former Miami OC James Coley.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 95 OVR

BOLD = Captain

Our offense is much improved heading into this season. We return nine starters – Charles Cohen and Marcus Wilson are replacing graduated seniors Duke Johnson and Ereck Flowers. Mike Collins looks to build upon his solid freshman campaign – he is out to prove that he has NFL talent this season. Cohen is starting at tailback, but he will rotate with Joe Simpson and Andre Wise. Herb Waters and D’Mauri Jones lead our talented receiving core – redshirt freshman and five star talent Tommy Hawthorne is hoping to make an impact in his first year on the field for the Canes. On the offensive line, Danny Isidora bounces out from LG to LT – Wilson will start at LG.

DEFENSE – 99 OVR

Miami is projected to have one of the best defenses in the country in 2016. We have plenty of experience on this side of the ball – all of our starters are upperclassmen. There are eight returning starters on this defense, and some of them have found new positions. Nate Dortch (Thorpe Award) and Raphael Kirby (Bednarik Award) are back after winning awards in 2015. Alex Figueroa makes the move from LOLB to LE for his junior season. Al Quadin Muhammed moves back to RE from LE. Tyriq McCord is finally getting to start at LOLB in his final season. Rayshawn Jenkins has the tough job of filling in for 1st round pick Deon Bush at SS.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Vince Davis replaces Matt Goudis as our kicker this season. All-American Antoine Dotson returns as our punter – he will also take care of kick-off duties. Herb Waters will be our primary return man.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

All of our players redshirting this season are from our 2016 recruiting class. Jay Wheatley will sit for the next couple of years – learning from Mike Collins before finally taking over for him in 2019. Aaron Pittman is projected to replace Gus Edwards at fullback in 2018. Fred Tucker, Jonas Robinson and Greg Rosario will also be impact players for the Hurricanes in the future.

RESULTS

Week 1 – #3 Miami vs #1 Ohio State
L 45-42
The Ohio State Buckeyes came into this game as the favorites – it was easy to see why. They were the defending National Champions – returning a number of impact players on offense. Last season, Cardale Jones threw for 2,270 yards and 22 TD – Ezekiel Elliot ran for 1,152 yards and 14 TDs (as a backup to Heisman winner Bri’onte Dunn). On defense they have the likes of Joey Bosa, Vonn Bell and Eli Apple.

This was a back and forth game – at times the Hurricanes felt like they were going to come away victorious. The difference in this one was the turnovers – Miami turned the ball over four times while Ohio State didn’t turn the ball over at all. A key turnover came near the end of the 1st quarter – Mike Collins forced a pass on third and long, Vonn Bell picked it off and took it the distance for an Ohio State touchdown.

The game ended on an exciting note. Down 45-34 late in the 4th quarter – Mike Collins left the game with a concussion. With 11 seconds left, backup quarterback Danny Johnson scrambled in for a TD. On the two-point attempt, Johnson connected with Herb Waters to bring the score to 45-42. Miami was able to recover their onside kick attempt – but unable to make anything happen on their final two plays.

Despite losing – the Miami offense was impressive. Mike Collins threw for 277 yards and 3 TD (with 3 INT). Charles Cohen had a fantastic debut, rushing for 124 yards and a touchdown. Robert Swain hauled in eight receptions for 132 yards.

Our defense was hyped up to be one of the best in the country this season – but we were unable to stop Cardale Jones and the read option. He ended the night throwing for 170 yards while rushing for 139 yards and 3 TDs.

Week 2 – #9 Miami vs #5 Florida
W 28-16

What a way for the Miami Hurricanes to bounce back. We finally took down the Gators. This was an all around steady and composed game from the Canes. Charles Cohen ran the ball 23 times for 136 yards and a TD. Rayshawn Jenkins led the defense with six tackles and an interception.

Week 3 – BYE

Week 4 – #7 Miami vs UL Lafayette
W 49-13
Mike Collins had his best game to date in a Miami uniform – throwing for 307 yards and 4 TDs. Charles Cohen ran for 210 yards and 2 TD on just 18 carries. Raphael Kirby was incredible on defense, with 11 tackles and a sack.

Week 5 – #6 Miami vs USF
W 28-3
This was a huge week for the Canes. We had former Miami OC James Coley bringing his new team to town. We also had ten prospects visiting. Mike Collins threw for over 300 yards, Charles Cohen rushed for 181 yards, and Standish Dobard had two receiving touchdowns. Seven of the visiting prospects signed by the end of the weekend – including the following five star recruits: Alfred Brown, Rob Nicholson, and Walter Mathis.

Week 6 – #5 Miami @ Clemson
W 41-13

Miami ran all over the Clemson Tigers in this game. Charles Cohen ran the ball 24 times for 116 yards and score. Joe Simpson carried the ball eight times for 64 yards and 2 TD.

Week 7 – #7 Miami vs Florida State
W 45-42
The Hurricanes took part in their second shootout of the season – this time coming out on top. Mike Collins threw for 329 yards and 3 TD, while Sean Maguire threw for 356 yards and 3 TD for the Seminoles. Robert Swain had quite a night – with 149 receiving yards on seven catches.

Week 8 – #8 Miami vs Georgia Tech
W 80-35

Both teams scored early and often, but Georgia Tech couldn’t keep up with the Hurricanes. Mike Collins passed for 371 yards and 5 TD, Charles Cohen ran for 291 yards and 3 TD, and Robert Swain hauled in 10 receptions for 209 yards and 3 TD. Collins tied the school record for touchdown passes in a game, while Swain tied his own record for receiving touchdowns in a game. Our defense also helped us in this blowout – Alex Figueroa and Antonio Crawford both had defensive touchdowns.

Week 9 – #6 Miami vs Duke
W 41-38
Duke always seems to play the Canes tough. This was the first team all season that was able to contain Charles Cohen – he was held to 51 rushing yards. Stacy Coley was the man to break things open – 113 yards and 2 TD on just three receptions. Thomas Sirk was key for the Blue Devis – passing for 282 yards and 3 TD, while rushing for 93 yards and another TD.

Week 10 – BYE

Week 11 – #6 Miami @ #2 Virginia Tech
W 44-18

The Hokies came into this game with an 8-0 record – actually deserving of their #2 ranking. The hype leading up to this game was for the two Heisman contenders – Charles Cohen for the Canes, and Brenden Motley for the Hokies.

Miami’s defense came out ready to play. Former Thorpe Award winner Nate Dortch picked off the first pass of the game. Charles Cohen scored two plays later – giving the Hurricanes an early lead. On Virginia Tech’s very next offensive play – Dortch nabbed his second pick of the game. Miami had a 10-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game.

Turnovers were the difference in this one – Dortch snagged his third interception of the game in the 2nd quarter. Brenden Motley ended his day with four interceptions.

Week 12 – #4 Miami vs North Carolina
W 48-27
Mike Collins threw for 402 yards and 2 TD – 168 of those yards went to Stacy Coley. Charles Cohen ran the ball for 147 yards and 2 TD.

Week 13 – #4 Miami @ #18 Virginia
W 35-5

The rankings are about to get really frustrating. We currently sit in 5th in the BCS poll. We are behind four undefeated teams; Ohio State (9-0), Nebraska (10-0), Nevada (10-0) and Rutgers (8-0).

Two of our players broke school records in this blowout. Mike Collins set the school record for passing touchdowns in a single season with 30. Robert Swain surpassed Clive Watford’s record for most receiving yards in a single season.

Week 14 – #5 Miami vs Pitt
W 38-21
Mike Collins led an efficient offense to an easy victory against Pitt. He was able to complete 83% of his passes for 230 yards – 111 of those yards were to Robert Swain. Charles Cohen ran the ball for 106 yards and 2 TD.

Week 15 – BYE
Miami jumped to #2 in the coaches poll and #3 in the media poll. The BCS has the Canes ranked #2. As it stands, the BCS has the following top 5:

  • #1 Nebraska (12-0)
  • #2 Miami (11-1)
  • #3 Virginia Tech (11-1)
  • #4 Kansas State (9-1)
  • #5 Ohio State (10-1)

Conference Championship Week
There were a few changes to the BCS rankings following the Week 15 games:

  • #1 Nebraska (12-0)
  • #2 Miami (11-1)
  • #3 Virginia Tech (11-1)
  • #4 Ohio State (10-1)
  • #5 Cincinnati (10-2)
  • #6 Michigan (9-3)
  • #7 NC State (11-1)
  • #8 Rutgers (10-1)
  • #9 Georgia (10-2)
  • #10 Arkansas (8-4)

Nebraska plays Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship while Miami plays NC State for the ACC title. Both games could essentially serve as the national semi-final. The winners of the ACC and Big Ten would have a viable argument for playing in the National Championship.

The Heisman race is also coming down to the wire. Charles Cohen is the current frontrunner, closely followed by Manny Stocker – the senior QB from NC State. The ACC championship appears to be the decision making game for voters.

ACC Championship – #2 Miami vs #5 NC State
L 48-34
We have a rematch of the 2015 ACC championship game – a game the Canes won 51-20.

The Hurricanes had a terrible start in this one. Mike Collins threw an interception on Miami’s first possession. Manny Stocker, on the other hand, threw a TD on his first pass. Miami was simply unable to stop Stocker and the Wolfpack offense in this title game – even though the Canes were able to score 34 points, they still lost by two touchdowns.

BCS Bowls
At the end of the regular season – the BCS rankings are:

  • #1 Nebraska
  • #2 NC State
  • #3 Virginia Tech
  • #4 Cincinnati
  • #5 Miami
  • #6 Rutgers
  • #7 Georgia
  • #8 Michigan
  • #9 Ohio State
  • #10 Nevada
  • Rose Bowl – #3 Virginia Tech vs #12 Oregon
  • Fiesta Bowl – #14 Kansas State vs #8 Michigan
  • Sugar Bowl – #7 Georgia vs #6 Rutgers
  • Orange Bowl – #4 Cincinnati vs #10 Nevada
  • BCS National Championship – #1 Nebraska vs #2 NC State

Despite being ranked high enough to appear in a BCS Bowl game, the rules state that “no more than two teams from any one conference could receive berths in BCS games”. Unfortunately – while deserving of a spot in the Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, or Orange Bowl – we were forced to play in a lesser bowl game.

Bowl Season – Chick-fil-A Bowl
#5 Miami (11-2) vs #25 Auburn (9-4)
W 31-10

The Hurricanes were definitely the superior team in this bowl game. Herb Waters played in his final game as a Miami Hurricane – he caught four passes for 37 yards and a touchdown.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Mike Collins set the single season school records for passing yards and touchdowns during his 2016 campaign. He was able to throw for 1,300 more yards and 11 more touchdowns than the year before – while throwing three less interceptions in the process.

Charles Cohen had an incredible freshman season – winning the Heisman trophy. Cohen wasn’t the only running back to make an impact in 2016 – Joe Simpson turned out to be quite the touchdown vulture.

Robert Swain set two records in 2016 – his 73 receptions and 1,497 yards are the most by a Hurricane in a single season. Stacy Coley led our group of wide receivers with 875 yards and 8 TD.

Earl Moore proved to be quite a threat from the DT position this season – with 17 TFL and 11 sacks. Alex Figueroa matched Moore with 11 sacks of his own. Raphael Kirby once again led the team in tackles.

Vince Davis was nearly flawless in his first season as our place kicker – he won the Lou Groza Award for his efforts in 2016.

Herb Waters gave our offense amazing field position nearly every time he touched the ball – he was voted the Returner of the Year.

RECRUITING

We once again came away with the #1 recruiting class on signing day. Looking back at our recent classes – this incoming 2017 class is even more talented than the class of 2015.

This group is headlined by five five-star talents – Alfred Brown, James Carpenter, Kyle Jenkins, Rob Nicholson, and Walter Mathis. Many pundits were surprised to see Miami sign two of the top three running backs in this class – especially with Charles Cohen winning the Heisman as a freshman and Joe Simpson scoring double digit touchdowns. If Brown and Mathis are willing to be patient for a few years – they could be the next great backfield at the U.

Our coaches traveled across the country to sign the class of 2017 – we signed players from 13 different states.

COACHING CHANGES

The University of Miami approached me with a contract extension – an offer that I accepted – I am now signed through the 2020 season.

Although I am staying as the head coach – both of our coordinators accepted positions elsewhere. Bill O’Brien is now the head coach at Syracuse University – he will partner with former University of Miami QB Brett Smith. Mark D’Onofrio has agreed to become the head coach at Southern Methodist University.

Warren Ruggiero comes in as our new OC. He was the OC at Bowling Green State University last season – helping them to a 9-4 record. Our new DC is Gary Anderson – he was fired after a 4-8 season as the HC at the University of Wisconsin.

NEXT YEAR

We have three straight 10 win seasons – including a bowl win in each of those years. Next year should be no different. Most of our starters return on the offensive side of the ball. Defense will be a different story – we graduated eight of our starters. We have been close the last two seasons – will 2017 be our year?

Building A Dynasty: The 2015 Miami Hurricanes

RECAPPING 2014

  • The Miami Hurricanes finished the 2014 season with a 10-3 record while going 6-2 in the ACC.
  • Maryland beat Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game.
  • Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M won his third consecutive Heisman Trophy – our very own Duke Johnson finished second in the vote.
  • Texas A&M dismantled Wisconsin in the BCS title game.

2015 is looking to be another successful year in Miami, here we go:

OFF THE FIELD ISSUES

Many college programs find themselves amongst off the field issues, and our program is not immune to these problems. When dealing with young student athletes, many different things can happen that impact the future of your program. I know that Miami does not have the purest history, but it is my intention to run a clean program.

With that being said – Kevin Olsen – a sophomore QB (86 ovr) has been dismissed from the team. He was expected to start under center in 2015. We now enter the season with high expectations and a QB controversy in Coral Gables.

CUT PLAYERS

We finished spring ball with far too many players on our roster, and unfortunately had to let go of eight talented student athletes – well, maybe just six talented student athletes.

The biggest loss from a talent standpoint was Kevin Olsen, which I touched on earlier. Mark McNeal was a four star QB out of the 2015 class – but there was no real reason to hold on to him with all of the young talent we have at the QB position. Alex Johnson, Paul Frederick, and Clifton Wilson were also four star recruits we signed in 2015 – however, they just didn’t live up to the hype they came in with.

PRE SEASON

We start the year off with four pre-season All-Americans. Duke Johnson leads the charge, and he is on the early Heisman favorites lists – right behind Johnny Manziel. Raphael Kirby, Larry Hope and Deon Bush find themselves as pre-season All-Americans on the defensive side of the ball.

The early polls have the Hurricanes ranked #6. We come in with a ton of hype after our 10-3 finish in 2014. Ohio State is the early #1 – they are hoping to get back to the peak they were at in 2013. Marcus Mariota and the PAC 12 champion Oregon Ducks are #2. The Texas A&M Aggies are #3 despite returning 3x Heisman winner Johnny Manziel and winning the 2014 National Championship. The Texas Longhorns come in at #4 and The Notre Dame Fighting Irish round out the top 5.

Schedule

Green = Home, Orange = Road

I went out and scheduled a few different conference champions to fill out our non-conference schedule this season. We open with Tulsa, the 2014 Conference USA champions. We follow that with a home game against the Florida Gators – a team that has outscored us 118-24 over the past two seasons. Next, we are travel to Camp Randall to take on the Wisconsin Badgers – a team that lost to Texas A&M in last year’s BCS National Championship. We wrap up our non-conference slate with a home game against the UL-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns – winners of the Sun Belt conference last year. To make things more difficult for us – Wake Forest has been replaced by Clemson as our cross-division opponent in ACC play.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 93 OVR

BOLD = Captain

This is a YOUNG offense. We have just two seniors starting – Duke Johnson and Ereck Flowers. Flowers is moving back to LT after playing RT last year, and Danny Isidora is moving from RG to LG this season. The big story out of camp is true freshman Mike Collins winning the QB battle. The spot came open after Kevin Olsen was dismissed from the team. Collins beat out Danny Johnson – a four star recruit that redshirted in 2014, Sam Clarke – a true freshman and the #2 QB from the class of 2015, and Nick Weber – a four star athlete from the 2015 class. Clarke and Weber will redshirt in 2015. Another stunning result from camp was the battle at Center, as true freshman Chris Ford beat out senior Dylan Smith for the job.

Our weak point on offense this season will be the line. Last year they were dominant – helping Duke Johnson rush for over 2,000 yards. Our starting line averaged an 86 overall in 2014 – with seniors at LT, LG and C. This year, our starting line averages an 81 overall – with just one senior starting.

We are finally beginning to see my influence on the offense – this season three of my recruits find themselves starting (Collins, Swain and Ford).

DEFENSE – 97 OVR

BOLD = Captain

We have a strong defense this year – specifically in our secondary. Larry Hope makes the move from CB to FS. He is going to pair well with All-ACC strong safety Deon Bush. Tracy Howard and Antonio Crawford are prepared to lock down receivers this season. Our linebackers are as solid as ever – Alex Figueroa and Jermaine Grace are elite talents, and they are only sophomores. On the defensive line, Al Quadin Muhammed slides over to LE from RE to replace former captain Anthony Chickillo.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Duke Johnson is hoping to do it all this year – and he is replacing 2x Returner of the Year Phillip Dorsett. Matt Goudis is back as our kicker – he is out to prove that he is one of the best kickers in the country in 2015.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

All of our players redshirting this season are from our 2015 recruiting class. Charles Cohen is getting a year to develop – he was unlikely to get any carries this season with seniors Duke Johnson and Dallas Crawford in the backfield. Nick Weber and Sam Clarke lost out on the QB battle – I am hoping they stick around after this season, and we may try Weber somewhere else in 2016. Vince Davis is taking a redshirt this year – we expect him to be our kicker from 2016-2019 after Matt Goudis graduates.

RESULTS

Week 1 – #6 Miami @ Tulsa
W 24-17

The Hurricanes unexpectedly struggled in their season opener. True freshman Mike Collins threw for 180 yards and completed a touchdown pass to Robert Swain – who was also making his Miami debut. Our offensive line struggled against the Tulsa front seven – Duke Johnson was held to just 52 rushing yards.

Week 2 – #5 Miami vs Florida
L 49-17

The game started out pretty rough – Duke Johnson left the game in the first half with a concussion. It ended up being a long day for freshman quarterback Mike Collin – he was sacked eight times while tossing four interceptions in the process. For the Gators, Matt Jones dominated the Miami D – rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 attempts.

Week 3 – #15 Miami @ #24 Wisconsin
W 34-21

Miami was able to regroup on the road and come away with an impressive with against the Badgers. Duke Johnson broke the career rushing record for the University of Miami during his 134 yard game.

Week 4 – BYE

Week 5 – #10 Miami vs UL Lafayette
W 37-34
This game ended up being much closer than it should have been. Duke Johnson once again was pulled from a game because of a concussion. Our offense had to rely heavily on Mike Collins – and he responded well. He surpassed 250 passing yards for the first time in his career, ending his night with 257 yards and four touchdowns – with just one interception. Robert Swain set the Miami single game record for receiving touchdowns, with 3 against the Rajin’ Cajuns.

Week 6 – #9 Miami @ Virginia
W 35-17

A pretty uneventful game – but a savvy performance from freshman Mike Collins. He completed 83% of his passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. Duke Johnson rushed for 2 TD, but was held to just 33 yards. On defense, Raphael Kirby led the squad with 11 tackles.

Week 7 – BYE

Week 8 – #9 Miami vs #4 Georgia Tech
W 42-28

Vad Lee and the Georgia Tech offense are incredibly efficient – the Yellow Jackets seemed to score whenever they wanted to in the first half. Early in the second half the momentum shifted on a single play – Antonio Crawford intercepted a Vad Lee pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. The Canes offense played a great game – Mike Collins threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another. Duke Johnson ran for 194 yards and a touchdown. D’Mauri Jones hauled in nine receptions for 110 yards and a score.

For Georgia Tech, Vad Lee threw just three passes – completing two of them for 61 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 12 times for 163 yards and 2 TD..

Week 9 – #5 Miami vs #9 Virginia Tech
W 23-14
This game was very close until the fourth quarter – and once again Miami’s defense changed the course of the game with one play. The Canes had put together an impressive drive, only for Duke Johnson to fumble the ball away in the red zone. The Hurricane defense took over, pinning the Hokies near their own goal line. Al Quadin Muhammed was able to sack the Virginia Tech quarterback in his own endzone – giving Miami a 16-14 lead.

Collins (232 passing yards, 1 TD), Johnson (96 rushing yards, 2 TD), and Jones (96 receiving yards) were the standouts on offense once again.

Week 10 – #5 Miami @ Florida State
W 17-14
This game was a defensive battle. Al Quadin Muhammed led the Hurricanes on defense with five tackles and two sacks. Ronald Darby led the Seminoles with nine tackles. In the end, the difference was a field goal off the leg of Matt Goudis.

Week 11 – #4 Miami @ Duke
W 49-35

The Miami offense was highly effective during this game – even with Mike Collins throwing three interceptions (he also threw for 3 TD). Duke Johnson looked like the 2014 version of himself, rushing for 225 yards and 2 TD. Nate Dortch came up big on defense with two interceptions.

Week 12 – #4 Miami vs #24 Clemson
W 24-6
Duke Johnson carried the offense in this game – rushing 30 times for 163 yards and 2 TD. On defense, Al Quadin Muhammed shut down the Clemson Tigers – sacking their QB three times.

Week 13 – #4 Miami @ North Carolina
W 31-24

The Tar Heel offense, led by Marquise Williams, had no problem throwing the ball against the Canes’ secondary. Williams ended the day with 323 yards and a TD through the air. Luckily for the Canes, Mike Collins outplayed Williams – passing for 3 TD and rushing for another. D’Mauri Jones hauled in two of Collins‘ touchdown passes.

Week 14 – #4 Miami @ Pitt
W 38-27
The shocking story heading into this week took place in the polls. Somehow, Virginia Tech (9-2) jumped the Miami Hurricanes (10-1) despite losing to the Canes just four weeks ago. Virginia Tech defeated Georgia Tech last week – another team that Miami beat already. This is going to lead to some wild rankings debates in the coming weeks.

James Conner and the Panther offense ran all over the Hurricanes this week. Conner ran the ball just 14 times for 184 yards. Luckily for the Canes, they won the turnover battle. Antonio Crawford snagged two interceptions on the day – leading Miami to their 10th win in a row.

Conference Championship Week
The Miami Hurricanes are stuck ranked #4 heading into conference championship week. Their early season loss to the Florida Gators is still being held against them. Ohio State is undefeated and holding steady at #1. They take on #12 Nebraska in the Big Ten Championship game – the Buckeyes expect to be playing for the National Championship whether they win or lose this game. USC comes in at #2 – they have one loss this season, to #16 Washington. The Trojans will play #5 Stanford in the PAC 12 Championship. Stanford is hoping to avenge their only loss of the season, which was at the hands of the Trojans. Virginia Tech is still somehow sitting at #3, they have the week off after coming in 2nd the ACC Coastal division.

ACC Championship – #4 Miami vs NC State
W 51-20

The game was back and forth in the first half – that all changed when Duke Johnson returned a kickoff 102 yards for a TD to start the second half. The Miami offense was unstoppable after that. Mike Collins threw for 237 yards and 3 TD – D’Mauri Jones hauled in 112 of those yards for 2 TD. Johnson led the rushing attack – accounting for 166 yards and 2 TD.

BCS Controversy

  • Despite going 12-1, winning the ACC, defeating #22 GT, and #3 VT – The Miami Hurricanes were left out of the National Championship game and maintained their #4 ranking.
  • Virginia Tech was idle during conference championship week and stayed at #3.
  • Stanford defeated USC in the PAC 12 championship – and jumped all the way to #2 in the polls. (Stanford’s only loss was to USC earlier in the year)

BCS Bowls

  • Rose Bowl – #3 Virginia Tech vs #5 Oregon
  • Fiesta Bowl – #11 Texas vs #6 USF
  • Sugar Bowl – #7 Florida vs #14 Nebraska
  • Orange Bowl – #4 Miami vs #10 KSU

Bowl Season – Discover Orange Bowl
#4 Miami (12-1) vs #10 Kansas State (10-2)
W 38-24

This was the last game for Duke Johnson in a Miami uniform – and what a way for him to go out. Johnson rushed for 238 yards and 4 TD against the Wildcats. Mike Collins only needed to throw the ball nine times during this game – he completed every pass for 158 yards and a TD.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Mike Collins had a great debut season in Miami – despite being sacked 41 times. This is the best play we have seen from the QB position during my tenure at Miami.

Duke Johnson capped off his Miami career with another solid season. He set the school career records for rushing yards and touchdowns during the 2015 season – 4,951 yards and 67 TDs. Otis Anderson (1978) previously had the record for rushing yards (3,331) and Stephen McGuire (1992) had the record for rushing TDs (35).

D’Mauri Jones led the team in receptions and yards – he was incredibly consistent this year for us from the slot. Robert Swain impressed in his first year starting at TE – earning 2nd Team All-American honors.

Raphael Kirby led the team – and country – in tackles this season. His numbers helped him to earn the Chuck Bednarik Award in 2015. Nate Dortch was third on the team in tackles and tied for second in interceptions – earning the Jim Thorpe Award in the process.

Matt Goudis was once again reliable for us. In 2015 he showed off the power in his leg – making a 59 yard field goal.

Duke Johnson was a solid return man for us this season – he even managed to set the record for longest kickoff return.

RECRUITING

We followed up our #1 recruiting class in 2015 with the #8 class in 2016. We were able to sign four different five star recruits in this class; Jay Wheatley, Greg Rosario, Derek Smith, and Jonas Robinson. Despite being the #2 overall prospect, Wheatley will have to be patient – Mike Collins still has many years under center for our program.

Our recruiting class was smaller in 2016 than in 2015. Our coaches were able to sign recruits from 10 different states.

COACHING CHANGES

Heading into the offseason I received a ton of interest from other Power 5 schools; Penn State, North Carolina, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia, USF, Indiana, Kansas, Purdue, and Washington State. I am committed to staying at Miami and turned all of those offers down.

The same can’t be said for one of my assistant coaches. My offensive coordinator, James Coley, accepted the position of head coach at the University of South Florida.

Our new offensive coordinator is Bill O’Brien – who was fired from his position as the head coach at Penn State University after going 4-8 in 2015.

NEXT YEAR

Our record has continued to trend up each year I have been at the helm of this program. We have gone from 7-6, to 10-3, to 13-1. Is 2016 the year that the Miami Hurricanes return to the National Championship?

I Read A Book: The Dog Stars

https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Stars-Vintage-Contemporaries/dp/0307950476

I have been thinking about The Dog Stars a lot lately, especially with all of the COVID-19 stuff that has been going on.

The book is set in a post-pandemic world. Many people got a virus – and most died. We are left with our main character and his dog – think Will Smith from I Am Legend. They are left to navigate what is left of the world after everything went to hell.

Without giving too much of it away, you could put the following movies/shows into a blender (but remove the zombies) and this book would be the result:

  • I Am Legend
  • Contagion
  • World War Z
  • The Walking Dead

The Dog Stars can be a bit slow – it is hard to exactly describe how the author wrote this book. At times you feel like you are reading a journal, at times you feel like you are reading the main character’s thoughts. For the most part – it works.

I know that there are a ton of high level Hollywood-type executives and producers reading my blog. Please make this a movie – it would be amazing – especially with everything going on now.

Building A Dynasty: The 2014 Miami Hurricanes

RECAPPING 2013

  • The Miami Hurricanes finished the 2013 season with a 7-6 record while going 5-3 in the ACC.
  • Georgia Tech beat Clemson in the ACC championship game.
  • Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M won his second consecutive Heisman Trophy.
  • Ohio State upset Alabama in the BCS title game.

If you want to read more in depth about the 2013 season – you can do so here.

Let’s hope this team can improve on their 7-6 season, time to move on to 2014:

Schedule

Green = Home, Orange = Road

We open the year finishing off our Home-and-Home series with Florida Atlantic and then Florida. The Gators are ranked #8 in the preseason polls, making for a tough game in the swamp – the Canes hope to avenge their 59-21 loss from 2013. Our ACC schedule begins early, with a Week 3 game against Pitt. We take a break from our ACC foes with a home game against ASU followed by a road game at BYU. Our season ends with back to back home games with basketball powerhouses Duke and North Carolina – followed by a road game at rival Virginia Tech.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 95 OVR

BOLD = Captain

We only have four returning starters on offense – Johnson, Dorsett, Bunche and McDermott. Malcolm Bunche moves from LG out to LT this season. Ryan Williams is our starting QB after backing up Stephen Morris last season. Gus Edwards – a redshirt freshman – makes the move from HB to FB. Clive Walford out trained Beau Sandland to steal the TE1 spot. Ereck Flowers bounces over to RT from LT, and Jon Feliciano finally gets to start at LG for his senior season. Edwards and RG Danny Isidora are the only two underclassmen starting for this offense.

DEFENSE – 93 OVR

BOLD = Captain

The Hurricane defense really struggled in 2013 – and is returning six starters this season. Chickillo, Pierre, Perryman, Howard, Gunter and Bush are all hoping to prove they can do much better than the year before. Al Quadin Muhammad, Rayshawn Jenkins, Raphael Kirby and Alex Figueroa are coming off of a redshirt season right into the starting lineup. This is a very young, yet talented defense – with four underclassmen finding their way into the first string D.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Phillip Dorsett – the reigning Returner of the Year – is hoping to replicate his success from 2013 in our return game. Antoine Dotson – a true freshman – is our punter this season. The three star recruit out of Iowa has an impressive leg and will help the Canes win the field position battle this season.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

Most of the players given a redshirt in 2014 are from the Freshman class. The exception being Robert Swain, Dylan Smith, Tyriq McCord, and Antonio Crawford. These four would see minimal playing time in 2014 – with another year to develop they should find themselves starting in 2015.

RESULTS

Week 1 – Miami vs Florida Atlantic
W 42-23

Ryan Williams came out of the gate with a solid performance. He finished the day with 229 passing yards and 4 TD – with only one interception. Duke Johnson also impressed, rushing for 177 yards on 22 carries.

Week 2 – Miami @ #8 Florida
L 59-3

The Hurricanes followed up their embarrassing 2013 loss by getting blown out by an even larger margin this year. Ryan Williams was god awful under center – ending the day with 5 interceptions. As a team, the Hurricanes turned the ball over 8 times – while allowing 5 sacks. Jeff Driskel finished the game with 6 total TD for the Gators.

Week 3 – Miami vs Pitt
W 34-31

The Miami offensive line won this game in the trenches. Duke Johnson ran for 199 yards and 2 TD.

Week 4 – BYE

Week 5 – Miami @ Wake Forest
W 35-21
Duke Johnson, the key to the Miami offense, left the game early with a concussion. Dallas Crawford took over and didn’t miss a beat – rushing for 185 yards and 2 TDs. For Wake Forest, Sherman Ragland hauled in 9 receptions for 114 yards.

Week 6 – Miami @ Virginia
W 21-14

Miami was incredibly conservative with their offense this game. Ryan Williams completed 14/15 passes for 145 yards and a TD. Duke Johnson rushed for 176 yards and a TD.

Week 7 – Miami vs #13 Florida State
W 27-7
This was a huge week for our program. Eleven recruits came for their official visit during this rivalry week game against #13 FSU. Duke Johnson had a career day, and launched himself into the national spotlight. When all was said and done, he carried the ball 29 times for 255 yards and 2 TD. By the end of the night eight of the recruits visiting committed to Miami.

Week 8 – Miami @ #3 Georgia Tech
W 52-20

Last year, the Hurricanes had no idea how to stop the Georgia Tech offense – losing 42-7. Miami was ready to avenge that loss, but had a tough night ahead of them against #3 Georgia Tech. Tracy Howard led the Canes on defense, intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble. Duke Johnson vaulted himself into the Heisman conversation with 186 rushing yards and 4 TD. Phillip Dorsett showed why he was the Returner of the Year last season – with a 101 yard kickoff return TD in this game.

Week 9 – #20 Miami vs Arizona State
W 42-28
Another game, another Duke Johnson performance for the ages – 232 yards and 4 TD. Clive Walford also had a great performance, with 177 yards receiving and a TD.

Week 10 – #18 Miami @ BYU
W 49-30
Duke Johnson surpassed 150 yards for the fifth game in a row – and ran for a season-best 275 yards on the day. He also collected another 4 TD.

Week 11 – #16 Miami vs Duke
W 53-50 OT

This turned out to be a wild game, and the Canes were lucky to come away with the win. With 33 carries, Duke Johnson ran for 177 yards and 3 TD. Clive Walford hauled in 6 receptions for 150 yards and 2 TD. The Miami defense finally stopped the Duke offense in the 2nd overtime – with Raphael Kirby forcing a fumble.

Week 12 – #14 Miami vs North Carolina
L 31-21
Turnovers were the difference in this game. Ryan Williams was able to pass for over 300 yards – but tossed 3 INT while doing so. Duke Johnson was held under 100 yards for just the second time this season – finishing with 77 yards and 2 TD. For the Tar Heels, Marquise Williams threw for 381 yards and 4 TD.

Week 13 – #21 Miami @ Virginia Tech
L 38-31

Back to back losses to end the regular season is a terrible look – especially when a trip to the ACC championship game is on the line. The Hokies ran all over the Miami defense – Trey Edmunds carried the ball 17 times for 173 yards and 3 TD.

Week 14 – BYE

Bowl Season – Russell Athletic Bowl
#17 Maimi (9-3) vs Army (8-4)
W 49-24

While facing an option offense from a service academy was intimidating – Miami was able to pull away from the men from West Point. Ryan Williams threw for 274 yards and 3 TD to end his collegiate career – with 161 of those yards and 1 TD going to Clive Walford. On defense, Denzel Perryman ended his Miami career with 12 tackles.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Ryan Williams had a decent season – he was a solid game manager and kept the offense moving. Our passing attack improved upon last season – hopefully we can be more dynamic in the future.

Duke Johnson set school records for rushing yards and touchdowns in a single season – surpassing records set by Willis McGahee in 2002 (1,753 yards and 28 TD). Dallas Crawford also had a respectable season – nearly reaching double digit TDs.

Clive Walford set the school record for receiving yards in a single season – passing Leonard Hankerson’s 2010 total of 1,156 yards. (In real life – Allen Hurns set the record of 1,162 yards in 2013)

Raphael Kirby led the team in tackles in his first full season as a starter – and he is only a sophomore. Tracy Howard led the team with 4 interceptions. Anthony Chickillo finished his senior season with 11 sacks, good for 7th in the Miami record books.

Matt Goudis had a great year, making 90% of his field goals. He was also perfect on his 59 extra point attempts.

Phillip Dorsett won his second consecutive Returner of the Year award – and his numbers were even better than they were in 2013.

RECRUITING

What a difference a year makes. Last year we had the #24 recruiting class, and on signing day this year – we were #1. We were able to sign 24 total prospects, with 8 of them being ranked in the top 100. Mike Collins is the #1 recruit in the class – he is expecting to see the field this upcoming fall.

Our coaches traveled all over the country to sign the class of 2015 – signing recruits from 16 different states.

Building A Dynasty: The 2013 Miami Hurricanes

I have been a fan of the Miami Hurricanes as long as I have been aware of college football. It is odd for me to be a fan of Miami, having never been to Miami. I also live in Oregon, which is about as far as you can get away from Miami while staying in the continental United States. To break it down, my fandom is pretty simple – they were hella good and had sick uniforms when I was in middle school – I have stuck with them ever since.

Like many others, I have followed along with Big Cat’s career with Coach Duggs as he plays through NCAA 14. While watching his streams on Twitch, I realized how big of a hole I have had in my heart ever since they stopped making NCAA video games. I decided to take the plunge and spend way too much on a used PS3 and used copy of NCAA 14.

GUIDELINES

I will play through my coaching career – beginning as the head coach at The U. I am hoping to build an Alabama-esque dynasty down in Coral Gables.

The game difficulty is set on Heisman, with 6 min quarters and default sliders.

RECAPPING 2012

  • The Miami Hurricanes finished the 2012 season with a 7-5 record while going 5-3 in the ACC.
  • Florida State defeated Georgia Tech in the ACC championship.
  • Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.
  • Alabama embarrassed Notre Dame in the BCS title game.

Without further ado, let’s get started with the 2013 football season.

Schedule

Home = Green, Road = Orange

I decided to keep our out of conference schedule in state. We are starting off with what should be an easy game at Florida Atlantic. Our next game is against #10 Florida – which will be a huge test for this team early in the season. We follow that up with back to back road games against USF and UCF. The rest of our games are against ACC foes, rivals #14 Florida State and Virginia Tech fall right in the middle of our ACC schedule.

Depth Chart

OFFENSE – 91 OVR

BOLD = Captain

At QB we have returning starter, senior Stephen Morris. In 2012 he threw for 3,345 yards and 21 TDs. Duke Johnson was the leading rusher last season – with 947 yards and 10 TDs as a freshman. Phillip Dorsett, a junior, leads the receiving core – he is coming off a season in which he had 58 receptions for 842 yards and 4 TDs. Allen Hurns and Rashawn Scott will also see significant time at WR. Shane McDermott is a team captain and leads our offensive line, but Seantrel Henderson has the most talent and hopes to be a high draft pick in 2014.

DEFENSE – 88 OVR

BOLD = Captain

The strong point of this defense is the defensive line. Captain Anthony Chickillo, a junior, leads a group of six upperclassmen that will see significant time in the trenches. At linebacker we have a talented group of starters, but there is not much depth. We will have to hope that Armbrister, Gaines, and Perryman can get through the season unscathed. Our defensive backs are young and eager to prove they can shut down the best receivers in the ACC. Deon Bush and Tracy Howard are just sophomores, but saw enough time as freshman to show they belong on the field.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Dorsett and Johnson provide us with a couple of elite options in our return game.

REDSHIRT PLAYERS

We are redshirting a number of incredibly talented youngsters – many of which should see playing time. With most of our starters and immediate backups being upperclassmen, the hope is to give these guys a year to develop without burning a year of eligibility.

RESULTS

Week 1 – Miami @ Florida Atlantic
W 42-23

This was not how the Hurricanes envisioned their season starting, but a win is a win. Duke Johnson rushed for 109 yards and 3 TD on 20 carries. On defense, Ladarius Gunter returned an interception 92 yards for a TD.

Week 2 – Miami vs Florida
L 59-21

Florida was the better team throughout this game. Their defense was elite, forcing Morris to throw 3 INT. On offense they were led by the rushing attack of Matt Jones, on 25 carries he had 157 yards and 3 TD.

Week 3 – Miami @ UCF
L 33-16

Our offensive line should be embarrassed to show up on campus following this loss. Deion Green led the UCF defense with 3 sacks, and the team came away with 7 total sacks. The lone bright spot for the Canes was TE Beau Sandland topping 100 receiving yards.

Week 4 – BYE

Week 5 – Miami @ USF
W 42-35 OT
Stephen Morris played his best game of the year while throwing for 259 yards and 3 TD – neglecting to the ball over for the first time this season. Allen Hurns hauled in two of those TD passes. On defense, Jimmy Gaines ended the night with 11 tackles.

Week 6 – Miami vs Georgia Tech
L 42-7

This was the first time this season that Miami saw the triple option – and it showed. Georgia Tech ran all over the Hurricane defense. Vad Lee had a career night, rushing for 241 yards on 14 carries with 5 TD. Lee also completed 5/8 passes for 87 yards and a TD.

Week 7 – BYE

Week 8 – Miami @ North Carolina
L 34-21

Stephen Morris turned the ball over too many times again, gifting the Tar Heel defense 3 INTs. Despite the poor QB play, Beau Sandland was able to top 100 yards receiving once again. Quinshad Davis torched the Miami secondary, he turned his four receptions into 176 yards and 2 TD.

Week 9 – Miami vs Wake Forest
W 35-28
Duke Johnson put the team on his back to the tune of 233 yards on 32 carries. He ended the day with 3 TDs. Our defense had a tough time shutting down the Demon Deacon receivers, future Bachelor Matt James lead the group with 123 yards on 7 receptions – scoring twice.

Week 10 – Miami @ Florida State
W 36-35
This game came down to the wire. With less than ten seconds left, Duke Johnson ran the ball in for a TD – bringing the score to 34-35. The Hurricanes decided to go for two – Stephen Morris connected with Allen Hurns on a slant to get the rivalry win. Jacob Coker had an elite game behind center for the Seminoles – completing 88% of his passes for 344 yards and 5 TDs.

Week 11 – Miami vs Virginia Tech
W 27-21

The Canes played it safe against the Hokies and came out with another win over a rival. Stephen Morris completed 94% of his passes for 183 yards and a touchdown.

Week 12 – Miami @ Duke
W 24-17
Nothing too exciting happened in this close win on the road.

Week 13 – Miami vs Virginia
W 35-14

Another game in which the Canes relied on Duke Johnson – he carried the ball 28 times for 148 yards and 2 TD. Stephen Morris had another efficient game, completing 88% of his passes for 155 yards and 2 TD.

Week 14 – Miami @ Pitt
L 33-28

After winning five straight games, Miami came back to earth, losing a close one on the road at Pitt. The offense was ineffective most of the game. Ladarius Gunter returned an interception 101 yards for a TD and Phillip Dorsett returned a kick for a TD.

Bowl Season – Music City Bowl
Maimi (7-5) vs Vanderbilt (8-4)
L 31-21

The Commodores dominated the trenches in Nashville. Wesley Tate ran the ball 15 times for 149 yards and 3 TD – nearly averaging 10 yards per carry. Rashawn Scott hauled in 5 receptions for 101 yards and a TD for the Hurricanes.

Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M won his second consecutive Heisman Trophy. He is the second player to ever win the award twice – the first being Archie Griffin of Ohio State.

Manziel collected 1,949 total points on the 2013 ballot – including 481 first place votes. He surpassed the second place finisher by 783 points.

On the year Manziel threw for 2,882 yards while rushing for 857 yards – amassing a total of 43 touchdowns.

MIAMI STATISTICS

Not a great year from Stephen Morris. He turned the ball over way too often. It is hard to blame him for that though, seeing he was sacked 39 times in 13 games. We were hoping to get much more out of the 5th year senior this season.

Duke Johnson was the clear MVP of our offense this year. He steamrolled his way into the record books this season – collecting the 2nd most rushing touchdowns and 5th most rushing yards in a single season for Miami.

Beau Sandland had an exceptional year receiving for a TE. Phillip Dorsett and Rashawn Scott were also key contributors to our passing attack – although Scott would have much better numbers without double digit drops. Allen Hurns was not as much of a factor as we expected him to be prior to the start of this season.

Jimmy Gaines led the team in tackles and was tied for the team lead in sacks. Deon Bush and Tracy Howard proved they belonged in the starting lineup despite being underclassmen.

Matt Goudis has a lot to work on this offseason if he wants to keep his spot as our kicker. Making 50% of field goals is not going to help us win many games.

Phillip Dorsett was a huge threat each time he got the ball in the return game. He consistently put our team in great field position – proving he was the best return man in the nation.

RECRUITING

It was my first time on the recruiting trail, and it showed. I contacted some elite talent throughout the process, but was unable to land any five star prospects. When it was all said and done we came away with the #24 recruiting class – landing 17 total prospects, 6 of them being four star talent.

Prospects at the bottom of the list were Walk-Ons, some data is unavailable.

TRANSFERS

Hunter Knighton – Freshman – C – Kent State
Gray Crow – Freshman (RS) – QB – Mississippi State

Both of these players left due to lack of playing time. Losing Crow is not ideal – he would have found himself in a battle for the QB job in 2014.

NFL DRAFT

Seantrel Henderson – RT – 3rd Round
Shayon Green – RE – 5th Round
Stephen Morris – QB – 7th Round
Allen Hurns – WR – 7th Round

NEXT YEAR

The Miami Hurricanes finished the season at 7-6 and are looking to take a big step forward in 2014. With a decent recruiting class and many talented players waiting in the wings, it will be exciting to see wha the Canes can do next year.

Classic Episodes: Butters’ Bottom Bitch

I have been on a South Park binge recently. It started when I bought South Park: Year of the Fan on iTunes. In that collection is 15 classic episodes – all with a preamble from Matt and Trey prior to each episode. Some of the great episodes included are: Chinpoko Mon, All About Mormons, Trapped in the Closet, Fishsticks, and Make Love not Warcraft. Among all of those fantastic episodes, none of them made me laugh out loud quite as much as Butters’ Bottom Bitch.

Description

After buying his first kiss from a girl on the playground, Butters realizes he can make money and become a man by pimping kisses around school. Meanwhile, the local police sergeant goes uncomfortably deep undercover to break up the prostitution rings plaguing the town. (from the South Park Studios Wiki)

What Makes This a Classic?

The highlight of this episode takes place throughout the B-story – following Sergeant Yates of the Park County Police Department.

The running joke is that he takes way too long to reveal that he is undercover, and it honestly never gets old.

Freeze, you’re busted buddy, I’m a cop!

You really gave my little hole quite a… STRETCH!

Half of them didn’t even use a condom! Don’t you stupid kids know the diseases you can catch!?

Some people are more than willing to go above and beyond for their jobs. Officer Yates is a clear example of that.
