I Read A Book: The Dog Stars

https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Stars-Vintage-Contemporaries/dp/0307950476

I have been thinking about The Dog Stars a lot lately, especially with all of the COVID-19 stuff that has been going on.

The book is set in a post-pandemic world. Many people got a virus – and most died. We are left with our main character and his dog – think Will Smith from I Am Legend. They are left to navigate what is left of the world after everything went to hell.

Without giving too much of it away, you could put the following movies/shows into a blender (but remove the zombies) and this book would be the result:

  • I Am Legend
  • Contagion
  • World War Z
  • The Walking Dead

The Dog Stars can be a bit slow – it is hard to exactly describe how the author wrote this book. At times you feel like you are reading a journal, at times you feel like you are reading the main character’s thoughts. For the most part – it works.

I know that there are a ton of high level Hollywood-type executives and producers reading my blog. Please make this a movie – it would be amazing – especially with everything going on now.

Classic Episodes: Butters’ Bottom Bitch

I have been on a South Park binge recently. It started when I bought South Park: Year of the Fan on iTunes. In that collection is 15 classic episodes – all with a preamble from Matt and Trey prior to each episode. Some of the great episodes included are: Chinpoko Mon, All About Mormons, Trapped in the Closet, Fishsticks, and Make Love not Warcraft. Among all of those fantastic episodes, none of them made me laugh out loud quite as much as Butters’ Bottom Bitch.

Description

After buying his first kiss from a girl on the playground, Butters realizes he can make money and become a man by pimping kisses around school. Meanwhile, the local police sergeant goes uncomfortably deep undercover to break up the prostitution rings plaguing the town. (from the South Park Studios Wiki)

What Makes This a Classic?

The highlight of this episode takes place throughout the B-story – following Sergeant Yates of the Park County Police Department.

The running joke is that he takes way too long to reveal that he is undercover, and it honestly never gets old.

Freeze, you’re busted buddy, I’m a cop!

You really gave my little hole quite a… STRETCH!

Half of them didn’t even use a condom! Don’t you stupid kids know the diseases you can catch!?

Some people are more than willing to go above and beyond for their jobs. Officer Yates is a clear example of that.

My Dad Pulled The Most Alpha Move Of All Time

Boys night – I went to the movies with my brother and my dad. We saw 1917 – a war movie – duh. We got our concessions, and used the the priority line at the AMC. Nobody was in the regular line, but if I’m paying for it, I’m using it.

My dad is a big time popcorn guy. You want butter sir? Lots. He’s also a salt guy too. AMC has done this thing where they no longer have the salt packets and the napkin/salt counter. They just have salt shakers. This AMC theater only has three shakers out at a given time.

Most people use the shaker at the counter and head into the theater. Then they get halfway through their bucket of popcorn and wish they had more salt. My dad is a problem solver. He walks over to the counter and takes an entire salt shaker and heads towards theater 8.

My brother said, “What are you doing – taking the whole thing? There are only three.”

My dad said, “not my problem – they should have packets.”

My brother looked at me and said, “that’s the most baller move ever.”

Three ballers seeing a war movie. Doing boy things. Stealing salt shakers.

AMC’s A-List: The Dark Side To Paying A Premium

The other day I strolled into the auditorium five minutes after my movie was supposed to start. (AMC is usually good for about 25 minutes of trailers before a movie). That should be plenty of time to order my large Coca-Cola and pretzel bites and make it to my seat – especially considering I pay a premium for AMC’s A-List.

Here are the benefits of AMC’s A-List:
– You can see up to three movies per week.
– Concession discounts.
Premiere member only lane at concessions and ticket counters.

Unfortunately for me the staff at my theater does not respect the high society perks that I am believed to have signed up for.

To buy snacks you have two options – enter to the right between the black ropes, endure the switch back lanes on your way to the register. The other – to the left, a shorter line between golden ropes. In theory a ticket to cut the line. BUT GOD DAMNIT – I AM MADE TO FEEL LIKE AN ASSHOLE EVERY TIME I USE MY GOLDEN LANE.

The peasants in my community are so confused by what I am doing in the other (golden) lane. They seem to think I am trying to cut them. I am not trying to cut themI AM CUTTING THEM – that is what I paid for. I am better than them.

Then comes the moment, the one that everyone is waiting for. Will the lone concessions attendant signal to me to come up – even though I got there just a second ago? Or are they going to signal to the single mother with her three children – the one that has been waiting in a long line for about 10 minutes?

I know what is right in this situation – but does AMC? No, the 18 year old at the counter waves the woman up – and gives me a look. The look says everything.

Sorry Buzz, I know that you have priority – but societal standards say that I should let this woman come up first.

You know what I have to say AMC? Apology not accepted.

Yesterday? More Like BESTerday: The Most Enjoyable Movie-Going Experience Of 2019

Yesterday, I saw Yesterday. To cut straight to the point – this was the most enjoyable movie experience I have had in a long time, and definitely my most enjoyable experience of 2019.

I know that I saw Avengers: Endgame earlier this year. And yes, that is a better movie. However, Avengers: Endgame was stressful and I did not relax at all during the three hour anxiety fueled epic tale.

Yesterday was pleasant. It gave me one of the two experience I seek out when I go to the movie theater:

Option A: An action packed blockbuster featuring a character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe OR Dwayne Johnson

Option B: Something that I can sit back and enjoy while I turn my brain off for two hours.

Yesterday definitely fell into the Option B category.

Without giving away too much from the movie – Ed Sheeran was the star of the film for me. He played an awesome version of himself and induced numerous laugh out loud moments for me. It was the other smaller parts that were the additional stand-out performances for me:

  • Kate McKinnon did Kate McKinnon-ey things as a Hollywood agent but it fit the movie perfectly.
  • Lamorne Morris also had a small part that was fitting of the movie.
  • Joel Fry brings constant laughs as the sidekick Rocky.

Hamish Patel and Lily James were both great. Patel has an awesome voice and produced some quality covers of songs from The Beatles. I would marry Lily James today (if we both got along and our personalities connected and she was totally up for it as well). Both actors has good chemistry and it showed on screen.

The irreplaceable part of this movie is the music. The Beatles had so many great songs. This movie would not work with any other artist or band.

Saving Game of Thrones: Fixing The Finale

The finale of Game of Thrones was fine. The writers and show-runners were able to wrap up all of the individual stories and end things on a decent note. For the most part, all of the characters that fans care about had a happy ending. Bran is the King, Tyrion is the Hand with his band of misfits on the small counsel, Sansa is Queen of the Independent North, and Arya is off on her adventures to the west. Jon, who had a pretty terrible ending to his story, still gets to live out life beyond the wall with his buddy and his dog.

However, there are some tiny changes that would have absolutely saved the final episode of Game of Thrones. Changes that would not have altered the story too much. Here are some options on what they could have done to fix the finale:

Scenario 1

Option A:

When Jon kills Daenerys, he cradles her and goes down on a knee to set her on the ground. Then, have him remove his face to reveal he is Arya Stark. We had all of that build up with Arya and the faceless men, only for her to use it just a few times. This would have made all of that nonsense with her training worthwhile.

Option B:

When Jon kills Daenerys, he cradles her and goes down on a knee to set her on the ground. Drogon gets all pissed and yells and melts the throne. Jon then should have hopped on Drogon and flown North of the wall. Then, when Tormund goes through the tunnel in the wall, the gate opens up and he sees Jon waiting there with Drogon.

Scenario 2

Option A:

They had the counsel deciding the fate of Tyrion Lannister. When everyone was going around deciding on the next king – they all agreed on Bran “The Broken” Stark. Immediately after it was decided – it should have flashed to Bran, showing his white eyes coming back to normal. That would have indicated that he had warged into the others to vote for himself.

Option B:

They had the counsel deciding the fate of Tyrion Lannister. When everyone was going around deciding on the next king – they all agreed on Bran “The Broken” Stark. Immediately after it was decided – it should have flashed to Bran, showing his eyes a light blue – just like the Night King.

Final Thoughts

In the end, it is really hard to end a series and leave everyone walking away happy. The season was rushed and I feel bad for the writers trying to force everything into just a few episodes – after taking so much time and care with it in the previous seasons.

What would you have changed with the finale?

Jonesing For A Thronesing: Series Finale Thoughts (5/20)

Because he’s the hero Westeros deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark bastard.

Tyrion Lannister

Thoughts on The Finale:

*Stormin’ Mormon =SM, Tommy Nuggets = TN, Buzz = B

SM:

  • I don’t even know.
  • Jon gets the wall huh?
  • I don’t like most of those endings.
  • Hated that Jon went to the wall. He did too much to get banished to that crap. What do they even do now? The Wildlings are friends.
  • I’m fine with him killing Dany. Did feel weird that they turned her in 3 episodes like TN says down below.
  • Really wished Drogon would have tried to burn the throne and Jon – but Jon doesn’t get burned and was able to take the throne.
  • Tyrion just gets free passes for everything I guess.
  • How the hell were there so many Unsullied? Honestly one of my biggest gripes. There should have been like 4 left. Looked like there were more than when she first got them.
  • Jaime and Cersei could have taken four steps to the left and been fine.
  • I liked Podrick being a knight of the King’s Guard. The small counsel was fine.
  • Greyworm would have immediately killed Jon – why would he wait for a counsel he has no duty to?
  • Glad Arya could steal faces and we spent seasons watching her get that to have her use it like two times last season.

TN:

  • I was like 80% right on predictions…which isn’t good when it’s that easy. *Editor’s note – he was not 80% correct, see below.
  • They definitely too the rushed and easy way out by giving most of the main characters a happy ending and turning Dany evil over a solid 3 episodes.
  • Would have been 100x better if the final scene was a baby being taken by a White Walker to come full circle.
  • Bran should have executed Tyrion right after he became king. That would have been old school Thrones.
  • Brienne should have been pregnant.

B:

  • I think that this episode was fine. It was a solid way to wrap things up. In the end it was the best they could do with the corner they had painted themselves into.
  • When Jon went to talk to prisoner-Tyrion the first time I thought that he was going to kill Tyrion.
  • Jon killing Daenerys was not that surprising – I fully expected something like that to happen this episode.
  • When all of the Lords got together it was weird they were just OK with Sansa taking the North independent – I feel like they would have been like “Well fine I am now independent too”.
  • I think that HBO and the show runners have set themselves up perfectly for any of three possible sequels. They could follow Arya to the west, you could follow Sansa in the North, or Jon beyond the wall. You would only need to sign on one of those actors (or Jon + Tormund) for a spinoff.
  • We got the Jon and Ghost reunion that we all wanted – nobody could leave a dog the way that he did.
  • I like the crew that is left in charge of the realm. Bronn, Brienne, Davos, Sam, Pod, and Tyrion.

Jonesing For A Thronesing: Episode Five Thoughts And Series Finale Predictions (5/13)

Dang. We are down to one episode. So far this season has been a total let down. I would say we have had one good episode out of five. Game of Thrones is batting .200 for Season 8 so far. Can they salvage the season and the series with a big outing next Sunday?

Thoughts on Episode Five:

*Stormin’ Mormon =SM, Tommy Nuggets = TN, Buzz = B

SM:

  • So many questions honestly.

TN:

  • They just phoned it in the last three episodes.

B:

  • Last week was such a great episode – this one left me feeling…weird.
  • This was like a bad movie. A lot was going on for such a short time period, but I had to watch because I am so invested in the characters.
  • Pretty cool scene with Varys getting killed by the dragon. I always thought he was a snake of a human. Maybe he had the right intentions all along?
  • If Daenerys is going to do that with one dragon, why didn’t she just do that from the start? Why even bring your army down for that? Why didn’t she do that to the dead army?
  • I feel like I knew Daenerys was going to turn mad, but it is still disappointing to see it happen.
  • What an awesome and quick death for Qyburn.
  • The Hound vs The Mountain was cool, but I also feel like they got a little too much attention for us being down to the final two episodes.
  • I really wanted to see Cersei killed by Arya or a dragon. Kind of a lame death for her and Jaime. Or are they still alive?

Season Finale Predictions

SM:

  • Arya kills Daenerys.
  • Drogon dies.
  • Arya dies from Drogon after killing Daenerys.
  • Jon also dies.
  • Sansa on the throne.

TN:

  • Jon kills Daenerys.
  • Bran on Iron Throne.
  • Bronn (High Garden)
  • Sam (Grand Maester)
  • Gendry (Wherever Baratheons Rule)
  • Arya (leaves on another adventure)
  • Jon goes back to The Wall to find Tormund/Ghost and sees signs of White Walkers.
  • Drogon lives.

B:

  • Daenerys will try to kill Jon with a dragon. The dragon either will refuse, or the fire will not hurt Jon.
  • Tyrion is killed.
  • Davos lives.
  • The show ends with Sam writing something in a book.
  • Sansa comes down to King’s Landing with an army to fight Daenerys and her army.
  • Sansa gets the throne.
  • Davos is Hand of the Queen.
  • Arya is the protector or whatever it is called of the Queen.
  • Bran wargs into something or is killed by some sort of magic.

Jonesing For A Thronesing: Episode Four Thoughts And Episode Five Predictions (5/6)

WE ARE BACK BABY! What a juicy episode – there was so much going on.

Thoughts on Episode Four:

*Stormin’ Mormon =SM, Tommy Nuggets = TN, Buzz = B

SM:

  • Why the eff doesn’t Bran use his power to do a little scouting of the situation???

TN:

  • Euron is a better Jack Sparrow than Jack Sparrow
  • These people had three unbeatable super weapons (dragons) and couldn’t use them worth a wet fart. Now there is only one left.

B:

  • This episode covered a ton and almost seemed to go too fast. Quite a bit happened and we definitely moved at least a month or so forward.
  • Gendry loses the girl but gains a Lordship – he will be more than OK.
  • Arya and The Hound off on their own again. Arya said she doesn’t intend on going back to Winterfell. Is she going to die?
  • Jaime finally declares his love for Brienne and then bails on her.
  • Tormund takes Ghost and goes off beyond the wall again.
  • Jon is such an idiot. Why would he tell anyone. It honestly makes no sense if he doesn’t actually want the throne. There was no benefit to telling his family that secret
  • Sansa is anti-Daenerys, unfortunately she told Tyrion the secret, and now Varys knows. Everyone will know soon enough.
  • I was shocked when Euron shot Rhaegal. Was not expecting that, but it was a good surprise. The Dragon-Killing Scorpion is a real threat now. Unsure how they will attack King’s Landing now.
  • Cersei is stone cold! RIP Missandae
  • What a fantastic set up for the final two episodes. I am so excited.
